At lunchtime today I noticed a kiter launching and landing from the WS sandbar.
This person is a frequent contributor to this forum and I'm hoping they'll post their experience and an educated guess as to how the sandbar is effecting the swell.
Fingers crossed that the sandbar has neutral effect or will enhance the swell (especially west of the mouth).

Not much in the way of swell today. But I think the potential is there for some real interesting action in the spring when the water is higher.
As far as an access point (landing and lunching from there) - It's not something that should be encouraged, especially not openly on this forum. There's not much for parking and it's a very visible illegal railroad crossing.
Additionally, PacifiCorp is saying they are expecting the delta to disperse considerably through the first winter/spring cycle due to high water in both the White Salmon and the Columbia. It's definitely going to change the dynamics on the water, but my guess is it will never be a good place to launch/land.

when i look at Hood River and its popularity during the summer, I think it has a decent amount to do with the access to the river. Well, that probably has something to do with the reason people started going there, then shops and biz following the people. If the WS sandbar does something, makes you wonder what could happen on that side of the river.

Unlike lyle, this is actually a legally accessable site. you can access it by walking under the tracks and since both the white salmon and the columbia river are federally navigable rivers, everythong below the high water mark is public property. Parking will suck. Hopefully the fishermen dont hassel kiters or their cars. if you look at the waveforms on the left side of pic 1 you will see where the old white salmon used to flow. Deposition will likely increase along this backeddy as sand and gravels flow downstream. Get ready for a secondary major debris flow when they breach the coffer dam. Then there will be unhindered, naturalish deposition. There is some major erosion occuring at the site of the old northwestern lake and i'm not talking about just silt. Both the erosion above and the deposition below condit dam appear to go far beyond any predictions I have read or heaed about. it seems like humans continue to underestimate the powrer and forces of mother nature. I hope you had an awesome sesh Tom!

That looks great!

Where do you park? How does parking along the highway work in Washington - do you need to be totally off the road?

He'll tell everyone where it is, how to get there, and where to park....

I think adam said this for a good reason.

I could easily see some insta-pro rigging his lines wrong, or a beginner thinking "oh wow, now I can launch here and wash up on the sand bar if I can't stay upwind" getting launched with their kite laying across the tracks and fishermen cussing at them.

I wonder if that's the same hydrologist who predicted the silt on the Sandy would take 2 years to be cleansed from the river after their dam removal..... and then the first rain storm cleared it all out in 24 hours.

Someone needs to go out there and plant a NWkite flag and claim it:
"That's one small step for kiters, one giant air for kiter-kind"

After the first rain? Are there webcams still showing the progress to date? I have not seen any time laps videos that went past the first couple of days

Is it too soon to start planning for the "Doug's Beach like gated Xing" and back-in parking area? The old Underwood Auction house conversion into a Starbucks-on-the-beach...with outdoor dining and actual train noises for the kids.........Wooo-wooooo-chug-a-chuga..."Keep your masks on, kids, and wait for the coal dust to settle; then we can watch the kites again!"
