From what I can tell it looks to be $200 to get a (kite) surfboard there and back to maui on Hawaiian airlines. I'm taking my TT in a golf bag with my other gear. I'm hoping to get around 4 or 5 days of kiting during an upcoming 13 day trip, of which I'd probly want to ride a surfboard a couple days. I think renting is the way to go. What am I looking at? $40 a day or so to rent? Who do you like for rentals over there?

You can rent at the weekly rate, and then just exchange your board for whatever conditions you want to surf or kitesurf in. Just call one of the surf rental shops, they'll explain it all to you.

Rent a van and a surfboard from Stormrider - http://nwkite.com/forums/t-24271.html.
Having a van is dakine. Leave your struts inflated and throw everything into the back of the van. If your focus is kiteboarding you will definitely want a van.
I just flew Alaska Air to Maui. We fit all our gear into one golf bag and one surfboard bag.
They charged $20 each way for golf bag and $50 each way for my surfboard bag.
Total was $180 for all our gear (5 kites, twin tip, surf board, snorkel, etc.).... way cheaper than renting.
All that and free Mai Tai's. Alaska rules.

Yeah last trip to Oahu was on Alaska and they charged just a regular check-in bag rate for my golf bag. Smile After reading the Hawaiian Air website it look like they are a bit steeper. For instance... $100 ea way for surfboards. Kinda ironic that ALASKA is more reasonable than HAWAIIAN to transport your SURFBOARD.

Keep that cost in mind when shopping for tickets.

I don't know, I flew Hawaiian to Kauai and checked a coffin bag with 5 boards and it was only 75 dollars. Even if it does cost a lot to bring boards, it's nice to have your own. If you could rent the same one you ride at home that would be awesome.

Damn, you scored Scriffler! I chose to fly Alaskan based solely on their surfboard baggage fee policies.

Being from Alaska forces me to fly Alaska and they are the best for traveling with gear. Double 6'3" bag with two boards and a full duffel of kites. $40 for both, boarding now for Maui.

Sounds funny, but you can ship surfboards via FedEx ground. ( what ? ) And its less than $40 each way for 2 boards in a box.

You can also find great deals on used boards at the cannery and the used sports shops, then ship it back. You can get a great near new board with fins and straps for around $200 or better.

THIS IS WHAT TO DO>>>>>>>>>>>>

Maui Action Sports SOLD me a board for $200, and agreed to Buy-it-BACK
for $100 when I was finished. I had the board for 10 days, so I had it at
my discretion with no "terms". I was able to pack a 7/10 kite quiver with my harness
and other needed gear (all weighed less than $50) so it was standard baggage.

The board was just an old naish have (kinda noodled) but did the trick!?!

If they have demo's going you can try some other gear also, but this was
the most cost effective, and i didn't have to worry about my BRAND NEW
underground twintip getting damaged on the trip. Surfboards are a whole other story.....

HAVE FUN! MAUI.... mmmmmm...... I clearly have not lived life right, as I am not living in
Maui!! Wish they had real jobs in Maui, although being a professional SUP instructor sounds pretty good!
