Definitely... They are putting together a little operation out of Lyle that is going to be SICK... Lots of great little hills around to start the process on...

Check out the trip I did with them out to Sun Valley a few weekends ago...

PS: Probably going to get some of this 25mph plus stuff with Brad Gordon later this afternoon out at the HYW 97 spot!

Last I heard, FlyStyle instructors aren't licensed, and if that's still the case, they can't provide you with a USHPA P2 certificate (which you need in order to fly legally as per Federal Aviation Regulations).

I'd also heard they were working on getting licensed though, so maybe that's changed?

The Cascade Paragliding Club keeps a list of licensed schools here:

Daniel and Justin are both licensed instructors and tandem pilots... Your all good with them... Plus they can fly a speed wing, BASE, and skydive with the best of em...

I can also help you out as a licensed instructor and tandem pilot. I've also been known to tip a speed wing up as well.

Thanks for the update bambam. I've met Justin before and he seems like a great guy. If they are licensed now, its all good.

Definitely get your P2 (minimum) and some quality instruction......having said that, FAR (Federal Aviation Regulations) does not require it to Paraglide or Speedfly, its only needed at regulated sites where USHPA is providing site insurance, you must also meet the site requirements (P2 only on P2 sites, etc).

I also am a fan of the FlyStyle crew and would highly recommend them for instruction and gear!

Well, I'll be damned, but apparently backtocali has it right. I'm not sure if the regulations changed at some point over the last 10 years or I'd been misinformed from the start.

Here's the link to FAR 103:

Hmmmmm, whether or not is it required or not... is it worth your life???

My advice... Find a damn good instructor...

We have a saying in the ripstop sporting industry...

"It is easy until it's not. Then you die"

Take some lessons, and join us in the sky...

We used to teach ourselves back in 1998 and it was ok, but know its looked down upon. The best thing to do is take some lessons so you have a license! And have fun and take it SLOWLY and Safely. Dont take any risks until you have taken a siv course. imo wayne

Yes, get instruction, get certified (I taught myself to kiteboard, but would be dead if I tried that same progression with PG/SF).

I have always been amazed at how unregulated paragliding is, its really amazing in this day and age.....I really appreciate having to adhere to the laws of gravity more than the FAA. Everything else that is this much fun is typically illegal.

I'm amazed since you enlightened me! I'd always been told that certs were required to fly without an instructor's supervision, and that USHPA was the certifying body for paragliders and hang gliders.

For an unlicensed pilot, flying (or even just kiting a wing in strong conditions or in the wrong place) without proper instruction and supervision would be extremely foolhardy and really just asking for it.

One of my concerns with the flystyle folks is that I've seen some of their students (while NOT under supervision) doing some really stupid stuff. Just because an instructor has great skills themselves, that's not enough. I think they need to instill more caution in their students. Maybe that's improved now as well.

And in regards to safety concerns once you are certified, damn near anything is dangerous depending on how cautious you are, where you fly, and what choices you make. I've been flying for 11 years now with no incidents but lots of huge grins Smile
