Get a surfboard and cut your teeth on nat. There are plenty of those out there for cheap, or go to the local shop and get a used or consigned board for much cheaper. Depends on the "budget" your referring to but 650 is some serious cheese. My first board, which is still nice wasn't even 2 bills.

Oldie but a goodie. Ono Hammersurf 158 I think. It actually might even be bigger. They also made the more common 148 Ono. They stopped making the stuff in like '05. I think gorge preformance has one. You should be able to get it on the cheap. Good wave riding board as it has tons of rocker.

I'm 6'6" 225lbs, I started on a 2006 cabrinha prodigy 158x41cm (~$150) 4 months ago, I used it for a couple months and then moved to a 2007 Underground 148x46cm (~$300). I don't know if it was gaining skill or the board, but once I switched to the Underground I started going upwind like a banshee! Smile I really like the artwork on the Undergrounds, you might check them out if you can find one.

For beginning, you probably can't go wrong with either board.

There's an liquid force proof 151 in the classifieds for cheap. It's an alright board, price is right, I think you'd be ok on it. Season is mostly cashed, if you aren't going on a kite trip you might just sit and wait see what pops up.
