New to kiting and currently using a used Naish Haze 141cm board... as I'm progressing I'm thinking of getting a new board (the footstraps on mine aren't a great fit, and the bottom fins are all pretty badly scraped up, though i don't know it it matters).

I'd like to get a twin-tip, but as far as what's good and for what purpose, it seems really hard to get a handle searching on-line as to really what makes a good TT board. Saw a video of Jimmy Lewis saying how sharp edges are bad and that kiteboard design really hasn't evolved the way kites have... don't know it that was just hype or what.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

So far - what kind of kiting do you like to do? Do you think you will be doing mostly big airs? wakestyle tricks? riding swells in Columbia? riding waves in ocean? are you young or do you have "old" knees? how much do you weigh? Many things can play into what kind of board that is best for you. Demoing boards is a great way to figure it out. I think there is a demo days at Stevenson Sunday .....

So far? Well, I'm just learning at the sand bar, so any time I get up and get a run I'm pretty happy... I'm 45, weigh about 185, 5'10"... my knees are fine... Eventually I'd like to get into riding a directional board, but for now I want to keep going with a twin-tip. I'd like to do jumps later... no where near ready for that now. I tried a Mako and liked the feel of the footstraps, but fell forward a lot more on the board than I do with my Haze. The Jimmy Lewis Model 3 and the Crazy Fly Allround are a couple of boards that seem to get good praise...

As for where & conditions I'll be kiting in... mainly in the Gorge, but I would like to get out to the coast at some point, and also Jones Beach sounds good. I fully expect next season to have a directional board and a TT board... just wouldn't mind getting the TT board now since my used Haze has a few issues...

Hey there!

I am coming up that way next week and will be bringing a couple of different sizes of the Monk from Shinn.

Would be happy to let you or anybody ride them that is curious about these boards.

Ride them and develop your own opinion...Pretty comfy foot pads and straps, nice in the chop and amazingly fun playing in some of the small waves in Maui recently.

When not goofing around on a surf board (Wainman) I spend my twintip time between the Monk from Shinn and the Joke from Wainman.

Shinn makes a lot of cool boards...The Waterbird is really cool as well.

Give me a shout if you want to hook up!

I am in my 2nd season and I am 48 yrs old. I have tried a few different boards and my Airush Switch 135 seems to work great for me. There really seem to be a lot of nice boards out there.

Here's a "heads-up" for you older guys....Stop using that expression! Ask anybody under 20 years old, for the reason why. Times have changed.

Get more time on the water first and hammer on that Haze until you feel comfortable riding upwind heel-side / toe-side doing power turns and some small boosting. A good cross over mutant is the OR Mako or SS Fuse series that will get you up and having fun in any condition as you play in the Gorge, Jones or Coast. By October / November your skills will be better and you'll find a ton of good boards on the market to choose from.

I would recommend the ss misfit, crisis, or older fx.
All three are great in chop, and also have a good amount of pop to help you learn your first jumps.
Most of my friends learned on one of these boards.

Kitezilla,

Here's the "memo" for you younger guys......Stop using that expression! Ask anybody, over 20 years old, for the reason why......oh heck, I'll tell ya. "Heads-up" is a gay come-on phrase that young gays use. LOL-point 3 and a half!!!!

The Misfit is one that I've been looking at... I am going to keep "hammering away" on the Haze, but really want to get a new board no later than next season. My Haze's fins are pretty chipped up, I don't know how much of a difference that would make in performance. My feet never feel all that secure in the straps, but it works for now.

I have several boards ranging from twin tips to flysurfer XL flyboard to underground fish surfboard. My current favorite is mako king. It is a twin tip with asymmetrical foot strap set up. I've used it in waves and flat waters with equal ease.

It cuts through chops like a small board and carves well in waves. Until I learn to jive and ride unstrapped this will be my board of choice.

Yeah the misfit is a great board for starting up in waves and jumping. The 2012 ss straps are way better then the current ones to were you should have no problems with you feet coming out.

don't worry about those dinged fins, if they are really wonky just take them to a grinder or sand them down a bit and that should take care of em. For where you are in your kiting you just need more water time and the board is not really going to make that much of a difference. I say better off to keep "hooking up" with that haze and "dropping hammers" on it.

FYI- everyone here is just going to tell you how great their board is, or they are pimpin a brand

Tell you this. I started on a misfit, then to a jaime pro, and now on an underground FLX. And yes..... i'm going to tell you how GREAT my FLX is!!

Its Wonderful, no face spray, clean tracking, easy on the knees, and money in the chop. The Jaime had WAY MORE "pop" which was nice but I quickly moved beyond that and have really really really enjoyed the FLX. If I were a hood river buttersnob freestyler I'd go for something more aggressive (meaning more stiff and poppy), but truth is I spend 80% of my time in the chop... and all my time on the surfboard in the surf (unless its double overhead), then i stay on the twintip for maneuverability reasons)

Rule of thumb. Demo a board before you buy it. Freaking nutso how different they are from each other.
