I wish folks like this would take a long hard look at the silly golf course the people of Pierce County (Tacoma Wa.) are paying for in deficit every year. I voted against it, but the golfers got their way anyway.
Only bright note it the county built a bridge over the BNSF tracks to a nice Puget Sound kite launch.

Is there a monster in that lake? Took my wife there to teach her in the shallow area and nobody wanted to ride further than 100 yards from shore?
We were convinced there has to be a Floras Lake Monster, oh well it was fun! _________________ Slingshot | Ride Engine |Try before you buy | PM me

Golf courses are great but how much money do they actually bring to the towns that surround them? I would say a bit, but I am sure studies show it isn't as much as you would think. It seems sad to lose that nice piece of coastline to a bunch of rich goofs chasing balls around a grass course. Money talks though, and if they want it built, I bet it goes in. |

I was there this last week and noticed this as well. I think it's the "chop". Close to north side of the lake there is almost no chop; it's like butter. |

take a look at bandon dunes, It seems that most of the people who visit stay at the resort. it doesn't bring in a lot of money to the local economy. I would highly doubt people visiting the course would go check out and spend money in port orford _________________ BIP- "YOUR GIRLFRIENDS FAVORITE" |

Just looking for consistency regardless of personal benefit.
We should be doing down winders Kip... I am still thinking about the last one we did. |

"it also has one of the lowest property tax rates in the state, at just 60 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. To make up for the shortfall, taxes would have to be raised to $1.99"
hopefully my math is correct. a $100,000 property is taxed $60. to balance the budget when federal hand-outs go away, this $100,000 house would be taxed $200. |

a couple of my buds and I played all 4 of the courses at the bandon resort about a month ago. then the ones that kited and i bailed to the KOA and kited the lake and whiskey. I still think it was one of the best weeks i've had. While we were staying at the resort, we did not leave and therein did't spend any of our money directly on the local economy. But, i had to tip a caddie $100 bux a round, servers and bartenders got a good amount of my money too. So, the people that have jobs at the resorts will help the local economy, i'm sure from that standpoint there will be other benefits also.
I dont think its a question of how people want to spend their time. Different strokes right? I would wonder whether or not you could compete with what is already there and if the presence of additional courses wouldn't take away from others. The addition of more courses is only good economically if additional people come there to stay and play, not if they stop going to one place and go to another instead. Bandon courses are considered among the best in the world, I would really hate to see ground broken and success not achieved. That would be the ultimate waste. |

I contacted some conservation groups to find out more of the scoop on this Floras Lake golf resort development. If you are opposed to this proposal, read on.
The Curry Co. Commissioners have now revealed more specific details of their development proposal at a Co. Commissioners meeting recently held in Brookings, OR.
You can read about it, in addition to the most recent overview on this issue (from conservationists’ perspective) by visiting the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society’s website at http://www.kalmiopsisaudubon.org/news
The next public hearing on this topic is scheduled for September 14th in Curry County. If you’re a resident of Curry County, mark your calendar.
As this is still just a Curry Co. issue, it is still at the local conservation group level. Contact Ann Vileisis, President of Kalmiopsis Audubon Society’s at annvil@earthlink.net and tell her who you area, and ask her to put you on their alert list, if you wish to know future, continuing developments on this matter
For people based outside of Curry Co., at this time it is best to write the Oregon State Parks Commission and Governor Kitzhaber's office to voice opposition. Feel free to model your letter as closely as you wish to the Oregon Wild’s written comment that is attached to this post, to save time writing your own. Oregon Wild's comments are worth the read.
Who has ever hiked around to Black Lock Point from Floras Lake on a non-windy day? If you haven't, do it next time your at Floras-- its mind amazing! |

It looks like local Floras Lake residents are opposed to this too and are getting organized. Here is the beginnings of their website.

The peoples republic of oregon..... FUBAR.
Will the golf course effect kiting? Will they keep the campground? I also golf...poorly. I can't see wanting to golf where it's windy. I've never golfed Bandon Dunes ($$$) but by the name of it - is the course wind protected? Personally, I think putting a course there is sad & a waste of money. I don't know of any public courses that aren't struggling. Seems like it would be a short season as well.
The Floras Monster: The water is just better north & typically waste deep. The further you go south, the choppier it gets and you cross through the windsurf zone. Not a big deal if you ride well & are courteous. _________________ Be kind to Kooks |
