One trip ....Cabarete

Kitesurfing Cabarete Video

You know Cabarete ? located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic (the second largest country in the caribbean) Cabarete has become a mecca for kitesurfing enthusiasts from around the world thanks to the Eastern Trade Winds and its turquoise ocean warm waters.
Cabarete’s weather conditions are usually the most popular around the globe for kiteboarders. The summer trades blow throughout the day, starting from 15-20 knots as early as as 11am and gradually increasing to 20-30 knots until sunset. The rainy season starts from october/november and then again in may, but due to climate change it has become unpredictable. The winter seasons are amazing bringing some of the greatest waves to our oceans.

ive been doing cabarete for 6 years now. never miss a year. been skunked twice, once it rained every day for two weeks! still had fun though. thats the nice thing about the DR, always something to do and a fun place to hang out, party, chill or whatever. epic trails for mtn biking or motoX, canyoning, wakeboarding, surfing, fishing. locals are super cool and friendly. stay away from sosua (except for a laugh at the german sex tourists or groceries). dont bother renting a car unless you want to explore outside of the town. you can rent a scooter or motorcycle for half the price and its easier to split lanes, cut through the crap and avoid the big trucks which can stop at any time (no brake lights).

semana santa (easter) is a 4 day party. 24 hours a day. complete mayhem. fun, but kind of a drag after the 2nd day. nonstop thumping from the dj's and bands that go all day and all night long. cool to experience it once. dont miss playa grande either. its worth the drive.

encuentro is a great surf beach just a couple of miles toward sosua. not great for kiting, but its goes off if you time it right. the reef outside kite beach is awesome strapless wave riding most of the year. bigger in the winter of course, so pack a surfboard along with a tt. november to april the humpback whales cruise by the reef on the way to playa grande to mate. pretty fun kiting next to a breaching whale, but watch out, they cant see you!

wind starts around 11-noonish and shuts off after sunset. 10m will usually cover most conditions but ive used a 6m and wished i had a 13 at times... bring everything you got, plus snorkeling gear. learn some spanish. and remember its an island. "tranquilo". nobody is in a rush to do anything.
