Hi,
I'd like to start commuting via train/bicycle from Seattle to Vancouver, and then bicycle from there. Train leaves at 0730am, arrives Vancouver at 1030am...about a 4hr ride from there to Stevenson, so arrive just in time for afternoon winds!
Does anyone know of any camp spots near Stevenson?
As I recall there was one right near the water on the west side of town?
If anyone has any suggestions it would be great, thank you.

You can camp at the fairground which is really close.
I think the train might go to White Salmon also then you could bike/hitchhike across to HR too _________________ Join the CGKA! Membership is only $10! Sign up at http://cgka.net/become-a-member/ |

The Stevenson Fairgrounds--as mentioned--are really close for camping.
I used to ride HWY 14 a lot; make sure you wear some bright colors. The most dangerous section--IMHO--is just East of Washougal to Salmon Falls Road in the afternoon. Lots of drunk teenagers coming back from swimming on the Washougal River. They're still on the road west of that section, but the shoulder is huge there. Your next biggest threat will be the tourists looking at the scenery and not the road; the bright colors help draw their eyes off the scenery and on to you.
BTW, there is a bus that goes to Stevenson too. Not sure when it runs...
If I see you out there I'll buy you a beer. Anyone making that commute to ride Stevie deserves one! |

Awesome guys thanks for the help.
Nak, thanks...I'll probably need a beer after this trip. and great advise on the bright colors...appreciate it.
Yep, just bringing my 12m Rebel and skim...they seem to cover most everything at Stevenson. I've got this set up on the bike down from when I visit Okinawa and kite there...it's not too bad unless it's really windy from the side.
anyone know how much the fairgrounds charge and if showers are available?
Thanks alot folks, really appreciate it.

Give us a shout when you're in town and we'll try to meet up with you. We have some storage room, sometimes an empty cabin for rent, or even a camp capable wooded lot in town near the fairgrounds in case the fairgrounds isn't available. I'm not sure if the fairgrounds has showers but you can call the city parks and rec and find out the rules.

I love the carbon mitigation plan. But driving SR14 daily...I say ride it only if you have to. There is a workaround to Salmon Falls road via Washougal River Road. Longer, mo-biutiful - but then you'll probably die on River Road instead.
You might be able to score a lift by any of us driving - timing is perfect for Stevie winds.
We are happy to serve as a rest stop at MM27. PM for details!

Washougal River Road in the summer after 11:00 AM on a bike... Definitely a beautiful ride, but after 11:00 AM I wouldn't even consider it. Even the sober teenagers have a hard time staying off the shoulder.
My daily ride from Vancouver was out past Lacamas Lake, through Camas, Up Washougal River road, down Salmon Falls to 14, 14 to Washougal, up the hill past the Castle, and the back side of Lacamas Lake to home. I heard lots of warnings about 14, but never had a scary moment on it. Drivers were pretty considerate as long as they saw me. Yellow jerseys are a wonderful thing... Washougal River Road after 11:00 AM was a whole other story. You gotta have a death wish to ride that road in the afternoon this time of year. Seriously.
Heading East on 14 should be a great ride, tailwinds... Heading West, especially encumbered by camping/kiting gear--Ouch. Headwinds will be a bitch. |
