Dangler, you sound like an extraordinary character that has experienced tons. Glad to see your input. IMO, your advice to never stop fighting is the best advice to give a person in a survival scenerio.

On a funny note, you've debunked every point raised against you. You're an over 60yr old, still paddling-out, cancer survivor that has spent even longer on the water than the lady in the article, in even worse conditions. I bet those stories are just the tip of the iceberg too.

One would almost think you might feel a kinship with a person that you share so much in common with. Then again, maybe you do, and thats why you hold her to a similar high standard as what you hold yourself to.

Awesome regardless,

Cheers

She was in a bay, what did she do for 13 hours?

Here's my guess: Broken rig, try to fix, decide to paddle but its against an outgoing tide, not much progress, night & fog come in, decide to wait it out till morning because she knows they are looking for her. Because she had a thick wet suit, gloves, hood it seems like a reasonable choice.

The weird thing about 3rd Ave is that the shipping channel is ~1 mile offshore but a couple miles north at Coyote, its 3 miles offshore. So swimming in can be a real chore because you are being sucked further from shore. I have done it, but its not easy.

I spent 15 hours a few miles off the coast of Newport when I windsurfed into a dead calm at dusk. It was November, 50 degree water, and pitch black nite. One of the scariest nites of my life. I would have welcomed a rescue, but since I was out alone, not likely.

So, how did the story end? How did you get back to shore?

The real reason she did not swim in...
Quote:
As far as the "why didnt she swim on her board back to shore"--she had become detached from her board and sail (the rig had come apart from the mast base) and she was floating either on her sail, or just in her suit!

The board is still missing, so be on the look out for it!

If she spent the night out there without a board, she's definetly earned my respect.

Rigs generally don't float(not for long anyway) if she was just floating all night , she was

Very cold. Hope I never go thru that, I'm too shark phobic.

Survival summary, spent the night uphauling my sail(long time ago uphauls were common) and doing the hula until my board sankto my knees. Had to keep moving to stay warm. After what seemed an eternity, caught a little puff, enough to slog, and slogged and slogged. Probably 2-3 hours in pitch darkness, never knowing if I'm headed in or to Japan.

Then faintly I hear.... Breakers! Came in about 5 miles south. No one was willing to pick up a hitchhiker dressed all in black at night( nprobably saw only an insanely grinning disembodied head as it was still dark) I ran the whole way back on some crazy adrenaline energy high. My dog was glad to see me, he was hungry.

What I want to know is.....when did her husband report her missing? If that was someone I cared about, I'd be on a boat all night doing grid patterns. One mile out past 3rd doesn't seem far. Did the coasties search at night or wait till morning light?

I've wondered about a waterproof beacon similiar for avalanches. With GPS the way it now, I think it would be a good thing to have.

Gotta say...I don't think 60 is old. Have you noticed the physiques here? Amazing & inspiring.

Also - Love that "Dangler" posted. His icon cracks me up.

What you'd want isn't an avalanche style beacon (those have very limited ranges at around 50 meters or less), but a GPS rescue beacon which they do have for boats or the backcountry. The waterproof ones run around $400-500 I believe.

My Aunt bought me one of these for when I go to Asia. Never carried it kiting but it is possible. You can also buy rescue and evacuation insurance with it for a relatively reasonable price.

She had a VHF but the battery died. There used to be CG Aux down there and sometimes the fire department will launch a boat from the Third Ave lower beach (I've landed my kite on it before - doh!). The big boats and chopper come down from Alameda, sometimes the chopper is engaged elsewhere and takes time to show up, but they're usually pretty quick. Cosmo is right, swimming there can really suck with the wrong tide conditions, even with what seems a short distance offshore. I dropped my kite about 30' off the lower launch coming in late last week and the rip was huge, wound up climbing the rocks a good way down the shore (super high tide so there was no last chance beach).
