Mon Jul 11, 11 4:15 am SPI in Nov? |

I have a lady friend that has wind surfed(some) and is interested in learning kiting. She's late 40's and in great shape. Due to work issues she can't really get crankin until Nov. I've been suggesting SPI as a great place to go for lessons and good winds....but....I don't know who to suggest for the best lessons there? Is Novemebr good timing? I looked on windfinder and it says its the 2nd windiest month and airtemps avg 73. It seems like hurricane season is typically fading out by then....are there better places I should send her? Mostly I'd love to know the who might give the best lessons considering her age/sex/etc....you know - the guy that's great at teaching the 15 yo grom isn't necessarily the best for a 49 yo lady.
Appreciate any input. Other locations that may be better for the timing would be great as well. _________________ Don't read this |

SPI is great in November. Nice and warm early in the month but can get a cold northerly or two the last week or so. Take a 3/2 shorty for the first two weeks but have a full suit later in the month. Wind blows fairly consistently but you could get skunked if only coming for 3 to 4 days. But stay a week or more and you'll get it.
Air Padre has some older instructors that are fantastic. Lots of personal attention and they have a great set up for teaching. Talk with Jeff at Air Padre to figure out who would be best instructor for your friend.

My girlfriend is flying a trainer now in prep to take lessons from Brett on SPI in November. Unless something's changed he works for Jeff at Air Padre. See you then!
Also, lessons in SPI is dead on; I took lessons there knowing how ideal a learning place it is. Get booties for her; there can be broken glass or shells. Air Padre uses headsets and boats to take the student to a windy place, away from crowds. Age shouldn't be a problem with Brett as he's no spring chicken anymore... I was thinking of starting that same process. Hoping maybe once she gets there she can start right in on water starts - since we have until Nov.
Are crowds an issue in Nov.? I know there's lots of space on the water but is it critical to get reservations way ahead for lessons/motel rooms? Seems like it wouldn't be an issue but..... _________________ Don't read this |

SPI is super cheap and empty in November. Most of the motel signs will show from $19.99 to $29.99. Thanksgiving weekend will be 59 to 69 but still plenty of room.
Lots of previous SPI topics in here to search for with info on where to stay and how to find the good deals.

Also search bayareakiteboarding; the 3rd Ave Crew frequents Padre so there may be valuable hotel tips there. Vacation rentals should be more available in November. Only problem is the wind is not always guaranteed like in the spring. For wetsuit I bring a Promotion 3/2 'storm shorty' and a Neil Pryde base layer; much easier to pack than a full suit. In November you're either in board shorts or full neoprene... |
