Hey folks,

My girlfriend and I are planning to do a bike trip essentially from Vancouver down to San Francisco from early June to late August.

I'm currently debating whether carrying kite gear (by a bob trailer) is worth the effort.

Like you I'm sure, kiting is priority #1!

We don't plan to make swift progress, maybe 30 miles a day. As such I'm thinking I can hack carrying 40lbs of extra gear (wetsuit,gloves&boots,board,2kites,trailer)

Can anyone give me any insight into where to look for kiting spots?

Also, if I decide that its too much gear to carry, are there any places along the way that I can rent?

Thinking of renting a car along the way and spending a week in the gorge.
My cous lives in Oakland so I'll hopefully hit sherman island (which i've heard a lot about)

Thanks bros
DC

you could also make some extra dough difibulating touring bikers...

Come on lets help a brother out.

I did Ireland on a bike and surfboard and it was utter hell
and I feel sorry for you. But your canadian and much tougher than I.

Nehalem Bay state park has a bike in campground and right on the beach. Decent side-on wave riding and one of the more consistently windy spots on coast.

There are some pretty hellish hills along the coast. I'd probably do the bike ride one summer and then do a drive through a different time.

I dont think I would want to lug all my kite gear in a bob, especially with fully loaded touring bike. Not that you couldnt get some sessions in, but that sounds like a LOT of resistance to be pulling, and there are some steep freakin hills on the coast, a fully loaded touring bike will already be hard. If your contemplating kiting at anyplace, Id see if there was a friend or a shop you could UPS your gear to, swing by and pick it up, kite for a bit, then UPS it back home. But if you manage both, major bad @$$ points well earned.

Multi-sport Epic-ness!!!!

Might seriously consider kiterbiker's idea....ship kites to predetermined spots.....probably easier to score a rental board....

distances are large with 40 pounds extra weight....wind cycles might be nutty....I'd say go for it if your partner was an addicted kiter , but this might seriously try her patience...wind chasing could be challenging when you have a vehicle...on a bicycle with a non-kiting partner....... might be mutiny.....

either way...be happy to support you if you get to the south coast OR...we can round you up a board for a few days of wind chasing....always have plenty of wind that time of year...be happy to accept a kite shipment and stash it for you....

sent you a PM

Great insight! Thanks y'all.

Holly, haha! Rock on!

DROCK & kiterbiker, I hear you about the weight. I've got a friend with a trailer, and I'm going to test it out in the coming weeks to see just how ridiculously difficult it may be. Keep in mind that we're in nooo rush. If we make it 10 miles, haha we make it 10 miles. The aim is to average 30mi/day.

foghater, thanks for the info! That's the stuff that I'm looking for, state parks right on beaches sounds riiight up my alley.

I love that idea about pre-shipping gear. I've thought of it myself, but I just don't know who or where to ship it. Anybody along the way willing to hold on to a package as I make my way south ??

Aeolus, now you're talking! Appreciate it, PM sent.
Haha I hear you about the girlfriend, but she appreciates my obsession and gets some good beach time in the process.

Tks again

good luck on the sufferfest!

OR coast is awesome

Here is a good start to camping/kite spots
(hard to imagine having to choose between surfboard, harness, 3 kites and ramen and extra tampons...)
grab the whole link and copy/paste

bring kites for oregon coast only. Once you leave Gold Beach (Pistol River) get rid of your kites and ship them home or doen to SF. (very few places to kite between Oregon and San Francisco). Beach access is tricky and wind is not as reliable.

Ya.....this is probably a good idea to ship from Brookings or Crescent City or just tough it out and haul them.

I have biked all the Pacific coast a couple times and I think it would be sweet to do it with kites....especially on the OC. The locations in WA. will require some bouncing around but you have PLENTY of time. Enjoy it man and take your gear!

Sounds like an interesting trip....

I would be willing to hold your gear ( near S.F.) Plenty of good kiting around here that time of year.
PM me if interested.

Hood River was a complete success! What an amazing windy spot.

Stayed at a fantastic B&B, Vineyard View. If anyone is ever thinking about travelling to HR, I highly recommend it!

On to the next spot, Floras Lake. I was wondering if there is anyone who will be in the area around July 20-25. I'll be arriving then, and have all my kiting gear except for a board. If anyone has an extra board handy, I'd be keen to borrow it and/or rent it if necessary.

Word! Thanks

DC

Talk to Will at the kite school there at Floras. I'm sure he will hook you up with a board or rent you one at the very least.
