Right now I'm using a Body Glove made for wakeboarding. Problem is my harness makes it ride up too much. What's a good one that gives decent float and cush, and stays put even with a waist harness?

I have one of these and it works like an impact and has a little pocket on back.

I really like them alot. They are not rated as a pfd, but they are very good and comfortable.

Check em out!!

Mystic D3o impact vest. I swear by it. Love it and has saved me some serious rib painigch.... I've hit the water from 40ft at mach 2 and upper body felt fine. My head sure hurt like hell though Sad

Plus it adds some warmth and keeps the fulshing out. totally worth the few extra bucks for the D3o, great stuff

How's the floatation on the mystic? and does it ever ride up on you? No zippers on that one so less to break. I'm deciding between the liquid force (which looks a little more floaty) and the d30 mystic (nice impact absorb, but ?? on floatation). I'm sure either would be great vests.

It fits snugly over the Mystic Warrior 2 harness so there's very little riding up. As for flotation, it adds maybe 20% more, it's definitely NOT a pfd but for me the sleek profile and impact protection is way more important than float.

As someone in another post said, if you can't float on your own with minimal exertion you should go back to pool and get your practice on. Just my opinion, I wouldn't trust anything other than my skill and strength to survive a short open water swim.

Except for maybe a jetski or a lifeguard ring--you could kite with that. Ha.

That was me that said that, but I was mainly referring to open water swimming. For Kiteboarding I'm a big believer in having some flotation. The LF vests aren't CGA PFDs, but they do provide some flotation while being low profile. It's too easy to sustain an injury that would make swimming or even floating problematic.

I'm not saying everyone should wear flotation, that's an individual choice. This is a risky sport by nature, and what level of risk you choose is part of it. I think it's important to make an informed choice though. The fact is, choosing to go without flotation could be fatal. But, so could choosing to kite in January with 20 degree air temperature and 35 degree water temperature. (Which I've done...) We each choose what risks to take, and NOBODY should tell us whether that's right or wrong. Tell me the risks, fine. But respect my decision as to whether or not those risks are acceptable to me.

The safety Nazis would have surfers required to wear Type 1 PFDs, which of course would make paddling impossible. The fashion police would call everyone with any flotation a kook. Neither is acceptable. Discuss the risks and benefits and leave each individual to their choice. (Not pointing a finger at you Jmatic, just got my rant on... )

I guess I have a comment and question. A few years ago, I bought a black Oneil type 3 pfd life jacket new for $30. It provides tremendous impact protection, excellent float and many options for hooking a hooknife right there at the ready. Granted it is a little bulkier than an impact vest but in no way hinders my riding. In fact as soon as I leave shore, I forget it is there....except for when it is needed. Still haven't seen the need to spend $100+ on an impact vest. Thoughts?

Spaceracer post the model of the vest u hav and I'll check it out. I'm probably not buying one til mid July so got time to shop around. I just know I want something that will work with seat and waist harness, and stays put. The vest I wear now is a body glove vapor with d30 foam. Awesome impact absorption and thin with decent float, but designed for wakeboarding and not for use with kite harness, so it rides up on me. I'm kind of partial to that sort of vest. Sured be nice to pick something up for 30 or 40 bucks though!

Hmmmm....was just laying in bed and thought about something that didn't occur to me earlier. I wonder if when I get yarded like on kiteloops and stupid stuff if BECAUSE I have a pfd on, which is thicker and more boyant if my falls are actually harder and more impactful on my body??? Some of my better crashes knock the shit out if me. What do you guys think? I'm obviously not slicing into the water more benignly with a pfd on.

The Mystic is somewhat easy to get on and off but doesnt provide much more flotation. It does provide more warmth, great impact absorbtion and flexibility which I find very important and it is thin and sleek.

remember that a bulkier vest will decrease the efficiency of your body drags. Get a vest that is form fitting and flexible, not buldgie that will slow your body dragging down. I find that you can have too much flotation kiteboarding. I tried wearing a wakeboard performance life jacket and the extra floation made me feel like a bouy in the water.
