I used to think that I wouldn't like the coast but I got out there today and the waves are frickin awesome. Got out there a couple times and get a nice boost of a big wave before it broke, super fun times. I can see why you do a downwinder though it was hard to keep my ground and I wasn't actually successful though I didn't lose too much.
Anyway I'm up for a Shipwreck downwinder whenever and I have a car that will fit 4 or 5 (sans gear), and 3 pretty easy if it's just the kites and boards. I'd love to be a part of some downwinders at the coast so look me up if you have an extra spot. Thanks. _________________ Captain kook; always wrong. |

Agreed the coast is sweet. You had good fortune. With the current wind forecast systems and ikitesurf I no longer get skunked (an old school term for no wind) in the Gorge. But its hard to call on the coast. And I have found that there is an upwards of 30% chance of skunkage when going coastal. Portlanders can keep this depressing stat lower by bee lining to Manzanita. Yes, the wind wave angle is not perfect but it is consistently the strongest wind on the north coast. |

It actually is much more simple: stop being a "small kite snob" and add a big kite to your quiver. This means a 12m, 13m, or 14m sle. More floaty board to the board quiver also. This helps aid in the skunkage dept.
another term is rerverse skunkage. Where your kites are too big for the wind. . .
Yes, the wind angle can be a bit on shore at times at Manzo, but Manzo is a gem. |

I was at FT Stevens parking lot B. Some guys were doing a downwinder to shipwreck when I was there but I tried to hold my ground because I had friends on the beach. I'd say that was a good place. It was hard to hold my ground because the wind was a tiny bit light. FT Stevens parking lot D (ponds) though is perfect for newb's on easties. I actually intended on doing that when I was there but the easties didn't turn on in the morning and finally in the afternoon the offshore wind turned on so I moved over to B with some other kiters and we did the ocean.
This is only my second season and I'm glad I didn't do open ocean before now. My personal opinion is that open ocean is not the place for a "big time newb" primarily because the swell can easily take the board out from under you and make it hard to get back to your board. Not to mention if your kite hits the water it can turn bad quick if your in the area the waves break. I'm sure there are people on here that will disagree with that statement so take it with a grain of salt.
And A.K., a twelve is what you throw up when you run out of beers _________________ Captain kook; always wrong. |
