I'm going to be in Pine Hollow right next to Pine Hollow Reservoir (easy to find on google maps) for Memorial Day Weekend and I will be bringing my kites. I haven't been to Pine Hollow in probably 10 years so I don't really remember anything about the conditions. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this area. I'd like to try to kite on the reservoir ideally but I'm really not sure if it could happen.

If I can't get any kiting in at pine hollow I will head to The Dalles for a day or two. I've only kited in Hood River and at Fern Ridge Lake near Eugene but I'm always looking for more places to kite around here.

Any input on the conditions at Pine Hollow or Tygh Valley (closest larger town) would be great, as well as where I should go in The Dalles if I do head up there.

EDIT: Looks like Wamic might have the closest weather station so maybe if people know about conditions there that'd be cool too

I have been up there to check it out. Never on the water but when i was there it was blowing. From what I saw of the lake, could be a tough launch, but again, I was only on the NE end of the lake.

My rule of thumb, If space isn't an issue, better to have the kites and not use them than wish you had them.

Your best bet on the Columbia would be Rowena (west of the Dalles) or Rufus (east of the Dalles). http://nwkite.com/forums/f-1.html

Please don't encourage kiting @ Rowena

I've never been to Rowena but from what I've read it can be a great place to kite, not so much to launch/land. I didn't say anything about my skill level so I think that suggesting Rowena could have been a decent comment. With higher water there should be *less* trouble there it sounds like, but I will probably only head to Rowena to check it out, not with the intentions of flying.

Also, if I'm going to Rowena from Tygh Valley I may as well just go to Hood River in my opinion. Hopefully it won't be packed this weekend because of the high water but I am guessing it won't deter too many people. If nothing else I'll just wander around, watch those gutsy enough to head out if it's hectic, and have a relaxing weekend.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for kiting at Pine Hollow though. I can see it now, I'd be the only one on the water except for a few vacationers at the far NE portion of the lake.

What's the problem with Rowena? Last October - I launched from Doug's beach and kited between there and rowena. The wind and current were just perfect, and it was super fun. I have only driven through the Rowena parking lot - is it a difficult launch? According to the net - kiters launch near the east end of the park? The wind seems to be good in that area a lot when I am watching sensors.

Rowena is definitely one of the sketchier gorge launches IMHO. If you have someone to launch and land you it isn't bad, but if you find yourself on your own, you'd better have a game plan. I typically leave myself an anchor to self land in case there is nobody there. Rowena is famous for wicked chop, so if that's not your style, head East. Buzzing back and forth right in front of the launch gets in people's way, abuses your knees with chop, and creates a hazard for other kiters/sailors so it's best to move downwind anyway (I hope you're reading this Flexifoil paintball mask guy).

The wind started picking up last night around 6 at Pine Hollow. The lake is plenty open and I'm hoping that it will pick up again tonight. I'm going to be heading into HR to go watch the demo for a bit then coming back down to see how it's going down here.

Fingers crossed that tomorrows winds show up here!

Given my years of windsurfing Rowena I wouldn't say it's a place for beginning kiters, mainly due to shifty and gusty winds (shifting shadows as N and W wind vectors battle each other). Winds can ramp very strong very quickly there, and the water can be rough (better water between Doug's - we call it Dougweena). If you're an experienced Gorge kiter you should be able to handle it though.

The launch is rocky but I wouldn't say overly tricky, other than the wind issue. If you still find wind conditions at the sandbar challenging I'd say you're not ready yet. Watch for submerged rocks at the Rowena shore, but with these high waters I doubt it's an issue right now.

Sorry, I digress, good luck at Pine Hollow!

Hood River looked great yesterday. It looked like some people had a real blast (a few body draggers, not so much).

When we got back to Pine Hollow there was no wind at all which was a bit of a bummer. Luckily there wasn't wind all day to speak of so I didn't miss breaking in the lake. Hopefully I am not making the wrong decisioin in staying down in Pine Hollow today while it sounds like HR could be another great day.

Once again, fingers crossed.
