Fri May 20, 11 9:47 pm CGKA - High Water Concerns - Special Rules Marina |
|
|
Right now we face a pretty urgent situation regarding high water impact in the Columbia. We believe this issue will affect use over the next few weeks and urge beginners to use caution.
The following is a special Port ordinance adopted TODAY for kiteboarding use of the Marina Swim Beach over the next few days.
REGULATION GOVERNING CONDUCT AT MARINA PARK SWIM BEACH
Ordinance 22 regulates conduct on Port land, Port waterways, and Port structures. The following regulation expands, defines and regulates conduct in furtherance of the provisions of the ordinance in the Marina Area known as the Marina Park Swim Beach.
Due to high water conditions in the Columbia River rigging, pumping, drying, launching and landing (“Kiteboard Activities”) are allowed at the Marina Swim Beach from May 20, 2011 through May 24, 2011 subject to the following limitations:
1) Kiteboard Activities shall cease on any portion of the Marina Swim Beach where users engaged in other activities are present.
2) The use of trainer kites is not allowed.
3) The use of the Marina Swim Beach for Kiteboard Activities is provisional until the Port of Hood River Commission considers longer-term solutions at its regularly-scheduled public meeting on May 24, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.
Stay tuned for more information on the high water situation.

Good news!
I'm glad to see the CGKA and the Port of Hood River reacting positively to changing river conditions. I feel the kiting community is doing a great job these days of keeping everyone safe and informed.

Great Work Pepi and and cgka .
This is the first time that the port has responded to a high water event with a rule change encouraging kiteboarding. This is a major turning point in the port’s perceived value of kiteboarding to hood river’s economy.
Congratulations to all.

You may be right with respect to economics Mark, but this also has the feel to me of folks on both the Port and CGWA who feel simply that it's the right thing to do.
Regardless, I do think it's a positive turning point and I hope that the CGKA, as well as the kiting family as a whole, looks to form a stronger union with CGWA and the Port to continue to make changes that better the World class recreation we have here.
