Horrible News!

Steve was an awesome guy and more stoked about kiting then anybody I've met!

He was always looking out for everybody.

As newbs, he always made my wife and me feel welcome and we really looked forward to seeing him at the launch. He was a true ambassador of the sport, not just to his fellow kiters.

I saw him shepherd a little girl that got too close to the water at Siletz one day. She'd wandered off from one of the vacation homes and was dangerously close to the drop off on an outgoing tide. He stopped his session and made sure she got home safely.

We could always count on Steve to be at Siletz if there was any chance of wind. I didn't know him that well, but he definitely died doing something he loved.

Our condolences to his family.

Nice shots Vadem - it really captures what a sweet day it was!

It's good to hear the stories from people that knew him a little better.

I am Dan Johnson, Steve's brother. I am so glad to find out that he did not die alone. Thank you both for the care you gave him. Steve and I have surfed all our life and would never think this is how it would end. There will be a Sunday ash ceremony at Pacific City Beach on the 10th and would love for you to join us along with any other surf mates of Steve's that could attend. Please contact me at danj600@yahoo.com or 714-720-6166.
Thanks for all you did.
Dan

I am Lisa Johnson, Steve Johnson's wife. I first want to say that finding these postings a day or so after hearing of my husbands death was very heart felt. Not knowing exactly what happened that day as I was at our home in PC, was unsettling. And to hear that others who were in the area raced to his aid -- is soooo very appreciated by me and my family. I had a wonderful and caring husband who would put down his life for others and was passionate about surfing (be board surfing or his new love kite boarding) and had traveled the world doing what he loved best.

Being a classic "surf wife" I don't know the names of all of you that he knew from sharing the same ocean and sport but he always commented how the Oregon Surfing Community was the most open and supportive he had ever had the pleasure of sharing the waters with.

For those I never met- thank you for your kindness.

Steve's service is Monday (4/11) at 1:00 at the Newberg Four Square Church at 115 West 3rd Street in Newberg. For those of you would like to join us I know Steve would apprecate it. You can reach me at dundeegal2@frontier.com.

I especially want to thank those who helped him that afternoon. I am forever greatful.

Dear Lisa,

I am so sorry to hear of your husbands passing. You wrote a beautiful letter and to have that kind of strength right now is truly remarkable.

When you say PC...do you mean Park City? I am in Park City now & will be for a few more weeks. If you need help, please do not hesitate to ask me. I can check on your home, babysit your dog, water your plants etc. When I had a death in my family a few years ago & had to be in Seattle, I had just planted my garden & it was super hot in the Gorge. I also had pets. The Gorge community stepped up & took care of everything for me and it was a relief to not worry about all that stuff - I am forever grateful for that. Even if you are not in Park City, people around you have a need to do something to help. Ask.

Condolences to you and your family,

Melissa

Pretty sure when she said PC, she was talking about Pacific City on the Oregon coast. It appears they live in Dundee (prior post) on hwy 18. From there you take hwy 18 to hwy 22 and turn onto hwy 130. Probably a hour from their home.

Regardless, nice offer melokitegirl.

Thanks for clarifying that Sasquach. There are quite a few people who live in The Gorge & Park City. I haven't spent much time on the Oregon Coast and am not familiar with the towns there.

By PC I was referring to Pacific City here on the Oregon Coast.

Thank you for asking.

Really sorry to read about Steve.
I didn't know him, but I have met people like him and they always seem to make you smile when you're stressed and take the time to help you out.
Sincere condolences.
Thanks for sharing the sad news.
