Tue Feb 22, 11 9:17 am OT: how many calories you burn SUPing. |
|
|
A recent article talking about different sports and the calories they burn per hour.
http://www.suproam.com/news/standup/59-How_Many_Calories_Does_Paddle_Boarding_Burn
Paddle Boarding- 500 to 700
Snowboarding- about 500
Rock Climbing- about 550
Whitewater Rafting- 300 to 350
Mountain Biking- 500 to 600
Scuba Diving- about 900
Surfing- 200
I for one am calling their findings complete BS. No way surfing only burns 200 calories. I'm always super exhausted after paddling out.
And 500-700 Cals Per Hour for SUPing? Have they ever been on one? I'm lucky if my heart rate increases at all, maybe when I have to carry the board off my car down to the water, but that is probably the most active you get.
Just my thoughts. _________________ Respect the kite, respect the beaches |

Yeah, surfing a 2ft point break is a lot different than an overhead beach pound. Alpine resort riding can't burn too many while your sitting on a chairlift.
I would say that SUP surfing on a sizable beach break would be top of the list. |

If you are distance paddling, and going at a high paddle cadence, SUP is more draining than any of the other sports mentioned. After paddling from Mosier to HR this week-end on a 14ft race board, in one hour, I was more beat than any other one hour cardio-style work out, including surfing. SUP works all muscles from your head to your toes, and when done correctly, it's a work-out, no doubt. _________________ [b]The CGKA is your advocate for Kiteboarding in the Gorge! Race a laser sailboat from CL to HR in August.
I was a noodle afterwards two years ago ........ _________________ Someday I will sell everything, invest in a 50ft sailboat, then turn left at the Columbia River Bar . |

I Know that cycling for an hr you do burn about 600 cal. generally when someone runs a ten min mile every 10 min they burn 100cal roughly.
One thing to remember is that just because you don't think your heart rate is very high because your not breathing very hard, your muscles are still working hard. especially for those who are in good shape. For most of those sports mentioned you are using multiple muscles groups. plus also think about the intensity level. the higher intensity level the more cals burned.
Take for instance snowboarding. you are using your core muscles as well as your legs and glutes. those are big muscle groups that burn alot of calories.
SUPing uses pretty much your entire body all the time..
I am not saying the numbers are right, but I do think they are somewhat a good ball park. I am not really sure about surfing, I would think it is a little more. |

id have to read the article, but it seems obvious that there are a lot of variables in saying that you flat out, each and every time and for every person, burn a flat amount of cals.
would be pretty easy to figure out for yourself. if you know your basic metabolic rate and resting heart rate you could just put on a heart rate monitor and perform whatever activity for whatever time. get the result of the heart rate monitor, get an average, do a some math.
yep, surfing has always felt like much harder work. my 2 cents, 'nuther stat i really don't need to worry about. i do these things to clear my head. |

BS! SUP surfing is liberatchi gay! Grab a real surfboard and do it right. Keep your damn SUP out of my way or I'll drop in on you. Especially on sizeable surf if your on a SUP then your just pathetic and can't ride a real board.
Surfing burns alot more that standing around on a SUP getting in the surfers way. Takes alot more energy to paddle with your arms into a sizeable wave anyday. |

I think you might be wrong Mr wind shitter this burnning calories.
Each person burns calories differently. Par example, you probably burn equivalent calories whilst hunkered down and pinching one off than most people would burn SUPing. |
