It's getting down to the wire on deciding where to go. The plan was to go to La Ventana initially but it sounds like SPI has been getting more consistant winds. An out-of-the country adventure sure sounds better than a trip to Texas though...Any suggestions?

I went to both spots last winter and have to say that SPI would be my choice. I admit to being a bit of a snob when it comes to conditions so La Ventana's lack of flat water and waves really left me wanting more. SPI on the otherhand has some of the best flat water on the planet and the ocean side is still really fun for mushy surf downwinders.

And if you want to get the out of country feel then drive 30 min south from SPI and you'll be in Mexico Wink

In 2 weeks spi will be over run w/ spring breakers......I live in corpus, and during march you can't get close to the beach......I was in los barriles last month and it was great.... big rolling swell in the afternoons, great fun on a surfboard.....

Just avoid Texas Week - Mar 13-20. Other than that week, SPI does not get that many spring breakers.

The gulf side surf down winders in SPI are a blast.

Just made this drive. No problema as long as you follow some very simple rules: No Night Driving, No Crack Purchasing

Highway 1 Baja was loaded with friendly helpful police and federal protection. Getting out of Tijauna and Ensenada was super easy on the tollway fly-over of the entire ghetto. 46 hours road time from Tacoma, 2,363 miles.

Note: You cannot "pack" as it is against the law to cross the border armed.
Of course, you could violate this law, but then you've already started down a bad path.

Next time I drive it I will add an overnight in Catavina (just S of El rosario). Insanely weird natural Dr Seuss formations of geology and plant life.

wylieflyote, tijuana has got to be like 1500 miles from SPI... not really really the same drive at all.

Depends on the dates. If hitting SPI at spring break I'd pick LV as it's more laid back. Unless you like college girls and bikini contests.

I like the kiting better in SPI as you get the flat water and/or the waves. LV is mostly chop, maybe waves if everything comes together.

Weather in both places is about the same although LV may be a little bit warmer.

DS,
I'm on the Pacific Coast of Central Mexico at the moment, and thinking of driving home via Brownsville/SPI. Do you know much about the dangers in that corner of the country (MX)? Thinking of sleepy coastal towns north of Vercruz, followed by an all day speed dash up the coast to SPI.

I've been in LV for almost 5 months now and have worn a wet suite once since I've been here, it's not that cold!

SPI is gettin' good. 83 degrees today, 20 mph. Surf was pretty small and choppy but still fun. Supposed to be 6 foot tomorrow and 25 mph.
