What's the main differences between wakeboard specific boots vs kite specific boots? are there differences in the support they provide? or are kite boots easier to take on and off?

I haven't used wakestyle boots but my understanding is that they strap onto your feet so you don't have to worry about loosing your board when you go for some huge gnarly trick.
This is my first season but I'm also lead to believe the tricks that involve taking your board off your feet mid jump are also out of vogue now so the straps are less necessary.

I would definitely say stick to straps if you are a beginner. Getting dragged through the water is hard enough without a board attached to your feet. Also I have fallen a couple times where my kite was still in the air and the board was attached but it was behind me (as in I needed to turn around to get going). It's really hard to turn around without taking the board off. With straps you can just grab the handle, take the board off, turn around, and put it back on. Of course I may have just not figured out the trick yet.
IMO if you are learning the convenience of being able to jettison your board at a moments notice far outweighs the little bit of extra time you will spend body dragging back to your board after losing it on the water.

Kite specific boots are a bit stiffer on the heelside to give a bit more support (this is not for all boots, but what has been done do some of the higher end kite boots as mods from the original wake design).
Support is going to be a preferential thing. Some boots are a bit stiffer and others a bit softer. Depends if you want to tweak your moves or have more power.
As for easier to put on and take off, the kiteboots do take this into consideration, but be forewarned putting boots on and off with a kite in the air is an advanced maneuver and should be respected as such. Most riders will ride the board strapless out into the middle of the river and when clear of other riders/shoreline, will then slip into their boots (this can be dependent on your location as well).
Anything comments/corrections from Forrest, Joby or Nate should be taken as override to my above comments.

Not much of a difference really. Neither will be easy to get on but kite specific might be easier, or meant to be. Personally I find companies making kite specific boots that are softer, and I like stiff, so I go for the stiffer slingshot boots.

I agree with Ian. Not a big difference between the two. Kite specific boots I think do try to be a bit easier on/off (like using one set of laces instead of two) and typically go for mid-range stiffness so they're comfier for more people to ride in for a long time.
I also prefer stiffer boots and since wake specific has more options prefer to just ride wakeboard boots. As long as you find a boot you like that's comfy and easy enough in/out you'll be fine.

The new liquid force kite specific boots are a bit different than their wake boots. Besides the stiffer heal side of the boot, they're also meant to be used a lot more as most kiters spend a lot longer in their boots than wakeboarders.
The U2 is actually really nice and I got to try it in Maui:

The healside is pretty stiff, the boot feels really well put together with a fairly stiff rubber outer, and I'm kind of digging open toe boots for the sand aspect.
