Anybody else local to Pullman or Moscow that wants to hook up with a newbie that just moved to the area for some snowkiting when we get some weather?
I've never snowkited but use to Kiteboard in CA. If I understand it right, its just a snowboard instead of a water type board?
I'm ready to roll, just need some snow, wind, and buddies to kite with!

Kelpy,
Yeah, I live in Troy, 12 miles east of Moscow. I'm a newb myself, been tryin to get into this sport for a couple of years; the couple of times I tried to take lessons (once in HR, another in Maui) there was no wind.
I have 3.5 sq meter foil kite that I've been flyin quite a bit at a park in Moscow. I have a snowboard, bought it last year, but it didn't snow much last year. I'm hoping my 3.5 kite will pull me around some to get a feel for it.
So, if you wanna hook up sometime to give the snowkiting a shot, I'm up for it. I do work full time and have a wifey and kid, so it'll be limited to a weekend day.

There is a handful of us up north in Cda and Spokane, we severely missed out last year, however when it is good, there is a ton of terrain down there I would like to explore. Im also a weekend warrior but do have an extra set up for someone to try out once your confident. |

I snowkited Moscow for a few years but very very few days will work with a 3.5M foil. Buy an old 9M Hybrid and have at it.
CRP land is your best bet for approval so out towards Troy most of the land behind Thorson Ranch was CRP a few years back. Not sure now, but no trees and nice wide open area etc.
The Palouse has many options to snowkite and towards the top of the Lewiston / Clarkston grade can be good and steady wind but farmers don't take kindly to trespassers rolling over their winter wheat so scope some areas and knock on doors for permission first.
Once you're hooked....make the trip south to Camas Prairie....aka.....Idaho snowkite mecca. |

Hi kelpy ,
I think you need a bigger kite unless you don't weigh in at more than... well very light weight . I use a 3.5 m Ozone for a trainer and on ice with skates ( next to nothing for resistance ). I used my 12m with skates and it was crazy , i just put the kite into the power zone slightly . Next time I used more padding , elbow and kneepads , helmet , then it's a hoot. Back to the 3.5m I found I had to work this kite somewhat to get going good but it is safer LOL . I weigh 190lbs . I would not be able to snow kite with the 3.5 unless I was on a hill .
Ice =least resistance
Snow = more resistance
water = most resistance
Get a kite for your weight and for the average wind conditions where you kite . Then add different size kites to your quiver for more accuracy , matching wind and weight etc.
Have fun , get a lesson

I didn't mean to imply that I ride a 3.5 foil!
I have a 11.5 Kahoona that I used for kitebording the north coast of CA this summer. I think that it will be plenty if we can get 15+ mph winds. I don't know how much it takes for snowkiting but 18-20 was perfect for me on the water. I didn't like it when it got to 25, just too much.
I weigh 177 right now, and I have a 161 snowboard. . . what do yall expect the optimum wind conditions to be for me? _________________ Newbie! |

Last winter I snowkited with an 11m Neo in about 10-12mph (200lbs) and did just fine. I am in the Tricities, so a couple of hours away. I am interested in any spots you guys find that are good. I also have a couple of different kites people could try. I am hoping for more snow this year. Less than 2 years ago, more than last year. I have thought about making the trip to Camas too to snowkite soldier but I don't think they have the dates yet. _________________ Team Rider,

Something else you need to realize when kiting the Palouse is that you need more power to kite uphill (kitelooping a necessity) and get out of wind shadows from the hills. I'ts a lot more 3-D than just kiting the water or a flat field. I'm 200lbs and mostly use a 12m Ozone Manta with 25m lines on the Palouse. Used my 9m once in about 30 days of kiting in 07' and 08'. |

I was wondering how the uphill thing went? And the lee side of all the rolling hills. . . Good to know about kitelooping. . . guess I just need to learn how to do that now
It should be fun!

Nada. Kinda sad. The early season came and went.
The upside is we're already breaking the motorcycles out!
Drysuit will be getting use soon though....

Good post on snow kiting your area. I have done the Camas Prarie the last 2 winters and am totally hooked. I have family in Spokane and interested to know where you kite board in that area as well as snow kite. I live in the Gorge so camas is a bit of drive. You will need a big kite if you want to snow kite most days. I have been on a 12 or bigger every time. It is not hard to do just hard to get the right conditions! Good luck! |
