I'm planning a 2 week trip there this May and am looking for some info. Anyone have tips on kite quiver to bring? Best place to stay for a small group? One of us in the group will be taking lessons. Advice on best instruction? I'm diggin the early snow but need to plan for the next season. Any info/tips would be appreciated. |

Bring all your kites. It can be real windy or real light. The wind can come from any direction and you can always find somewhere to ride in any direction. If you get a good SE or NE wind the downwinders are amazing in the waves. If there is any West in the wind the sound is a better call. Rent a house from: http://www.hatterasrealty.com/rental/query.html
Here is the one we had:
http://www.hatterasrealty.com/rental/house.html?ID=385&Avail=&Stay=
We had a house right on the sound that we could ride right from the backyard with a pool, hot tub, outdoor shower and pool table. Every room had it's own private bathroom. I paid $330 for my room for the entire week.
Bring a wetsuit! The weather can change with one swing in wind direction.
Where are you flying to? Most folks fly into Norfolk, VA or DC. I flew in and out of Raleigh and it was a little less expensive. Either way the drive to the OBX is easy. _________________ KB4C!!!!!!!!!!!!

blanco has it covered pretty well there...just to add a few things:
May is a magic month for solid wind AND some warmth starting to arrive.
As long as you do not wait 'til the end of the month, you will enjoy a major discount on the rental price of the house due to "Off-Season Rates".
Occupancy does not ramp up to full tilt until the summer months so you will have a lot to choose from.
A key thing to note is that the further you go down the Island the more remote and laid back it gets IMO. If you like strip malls and lots of people then Nags Head and North is fine, but for my tastes, I have to end up somewhere in Waves down through Avon...that's the sweet spot in my book. Personal all time favorite would be around Askins Creek. You can be in this area at the end of Park Dr. in Avon which is the last street before you leave Avon traveling South, or one of the soundside houses in Kinakeet Shores.
If barefoot, keep your eye out for random oysters on end, mostly buried in the sand which can totally slice your foot. Booties to play it safe. _________________ "USE THE FORCE" |

Why Cape Hatteras??? Like one of the users said, "bring all your kites"
How about going a little further and down to the Caribbean? In the end you will spend about the same for one of our Caribbean Catamaran Kite Cruises, www.TheKiteLife.com _________________ www.TheKiteLife.com

Frequent flyer ticket = $40
house share for the week = $350
Food for the week. = $300
Share a rent a car = $150
gas= $40
Total for a week of waves and flats = less than $1000
I would love to go on a cat sailing cruise for that. _________________ KB4C!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're going to jump onto this discussion with such a plug, could you give us a cost per person for a week in the BVIs? We need a comparison. |
