Drove 2.5 hours round trip Sunday to Turnagain Pass, only to encounter a giant, roaming Skunk. (Everything is bigger in Alaska.)
Drove 5 minutes yesterday to get some out my front door. Go figure...

That sky blue is way better than the smurf blue you BSUians/Idahoans subject us to view on TV. When is the kicker lynching scheduled? Razz Or has it already occurred?

Hola lks,

I'm going to snowkite at turnagain in december and hopefully get all the wind you missed out on Very Happy , I have a 9m/12m, are those going to be my best bet?

Is portage lake frozen yet? That place looks amazing.

Are there any rules/restrictions to know about?

I'm going to be there a week, anywhere else to hit up that's close in Anchorage?

Your 9 and 12 should be fine. If we get some high wind situations I'll let you borrow my HQ II 7 or HQ 5m. I've got to warn you, though, that they are twitchy little kites. For no wind, we've got world class skiing at Alyeska, about 40 minutes away from Anchorage. In Anchorage itself, everything is only ten minutes away. That shot above of me on my HQ was taken on the coastal flats, which are in Anchorage proper. You can see some of the city lights in the background. If you maps.google "Reef Drive, Anchorage Alaska" you can see where we "put in" to the coastal flats. All that muddy tidal area in the satellite photo gets covered with snow. Problem is, if we get a high tide, it takes away all the snow cover. But then it usually snows again and we're back in action.

As for rules, there really aren't many. It's still pretty much the wild west up here, and there haven't been any bad accidents that have resulted in kiters being banned anywhere that I know of. Stay off private property unless you have their permission, of course, and there are certain procedures from crossing the railroad tracks. For those procedures, and a list of the best places to kite in and around Anchorage, as well as current weather, forcasts, and webcams of those places, including Portage (which doesn't look like it's frozen yet), go to eastofanchorage.net. It's got everything there.

PM me when you get here and I'll see if we can't round up my kite-buddies for some sick sessions, followed by growlers of Alaskan Amber and piles of Moose's Tooth Pizza. First round is on me...

Pleasant Breezes,
LKS

I love mooses' tooth. They got some tasty pizza.

Are the tidal flats the ones near Kincaid Park?

My fiace grew up there, and this will be my fourth trip up there.

Alyeska was fun, but when I went last year, it was zero at the base. Thumb's Up

I'll pm you when I get up there Very Happy
