My girlfriend and I are heading to north shore Maui next month. She really wants to get into SUPing. Any suggestions on where to rent at a decent price in a good location. Probably flat water to start. Small waves later. We'll be staying near Hookipa but can probably drive to wherever. We just don't want to get raked over the coals in a touristy rental shop.
Also, for rental cars: Frank's is booked up for October. Any other suggestions for renting older model vehicles?
Thanks,

Friends of mine own this shop... Primarily a Windsurfing center now really into SUP... Owners are Bart and Dogmar... Bart just won a SUP race in Holland, Germany, and placed in the last Battle of the Paddle. Great shop, Great people.. Located right next to Maui Hot Sails....
Cheers

We always rent from Al West's Maui Vans. He has a pretty broad range of cars and vans, small to big, old to newer so you can go with a price that fits. They leave the car at the airport for you then you go to their shop to get checked in, get a cooler, sand chairs and mats. And they don't charge you if the car comes back with sand in it.

I'm with Tony on Al West. They were always super cool and you get a decent car for cheap. Plus they are wind people. Most of all the shops by the airport there are pretty cool. I'm sure they are SUPing over at Kanaha. Super mellow in the morning and she could probably get into some waves too. I'm sure there are all kinds of Jesus sweepers over there now. Last time I was there I saw like one or two. Probably can't swing a dead cat without hitting one now. _________________ "I don't believe in doing work that I don't want to do in order to live a life that I don't want to live."

I rent at the Naish Pro Shop...
If you have little experience in SUP don't take it out on the north shore...the lineup there can be a "little" competitive
I'd say rent in Kahului and take the boards to the south shore....if you rent in a primarily tourist spot I don't think the prices are so different (I don't know this) but the boards are often huge, heavy and water soaked....better get some nice ones instead... |

Kahalui best for rental stuff for sure.
On north shore would try a few downwind paddles if you have friends or another car . Launch at tavares ( sp. ? ) beach just outside Paia before blue tile house on left . can't miss it. make sure u go out a bit beyond the reef to your left .
from there paddle downwind and get out at Kanaha. For shorter paddle get out at Baldwin beach / Paia bay.
On south shore (Kihei side ) head towards Lahaina about 5-10 miles past the tunnel there are a number of small beaches that are great flat water spots for SUP paddle training. You will see some small trees and sandy pullouts on your left . it's past a surf spot called guard rails. past where Jersey Barrier ends. if it's windy on north shore go here. if it's south wind avoid this side.
- oh also don't forget to hit Da' Kitchen in Kahalui for some Ono grinds . Its my favorite for local flavors.
enjoy
