any suggestions for where to go for october for a world class wave spot, and/or beginner surf spot? i'm only interested in a place that's very reliable.

maui? maybe overlap of wind and swell, but i don't think it's guaranteed. read that la nina may make it worse. any first hand reports of october conditions?

peru? 90% of all photos and videos i have seen of mancora and lobitos look really small.... maybe pacasmayos is better, but it seems like oct is toward the end of their swell season, so maybe risky, and it seems like a lighter wind spot? first hand reports would be interesting. i just haven't seen much video to support all the hype of peru.

matanzas chile??? possible, but cold.

surfing in central america? looks like october is stormiest part of the rainy season, and not ideal....

let me know if i am wrong about some of this. what other places am i missing?

I've been to Maui 3 different times and all of them on or around Halloween. The swell and wind were there each time. I know a few other people that go there in Oct. as well for that reason. Worst case is your in Maui, darn.

For lefts or rights?

For lefts you got a ton of options.. Id say your best bet would be Sumbawa or Peru

For rights Id say Maui or a much cheaper option California. From Santa Cruz to
Ventura still has good weather with great wave kiting.

On a big NW swell my dream trip is Cabo Verde. Theres a right hander there that goes off! Usually more winter

Your kinda in between peak time for everywhere.

Anyplace on earth can be flat at any given time.

Good Luck

thanks for the replies.

i prefer rights, but learned to right switch, so lefts are ok too.

i guess california could be interesting if i watched the extended forecast and timed it well.

i did a season in western oz 2 years ago, but it's too expensive and complicated to set it up just for a month. unfortunately.

sumbawa, cape verde, mauritius are all too far also. i talked to some guys who used to go to cape verde every winter and although they said it's amazing, it's pretty rare for it to be big like in the movies. i've heard sumbawa is really fickle also. what a frustrating sport.

maui and peru still interesting.

How about San Carlos, Baja. I think it's usually pretty good in October...

Agree , San Carlos could be really good although again you need a swell and the souths would be starting to taper off

another thought is Hatteras.. waters still warm.. great wind ive heard and its beach break so you wouldnt need an epic swell to make it go.

If you want 'reliable' surf this time of year, look at spots that will work well on multiple swell directions.

Fall in S Cal (central too) is transitioning between S/SW swell events and N/NW swell.

Places like Waddell & Steamers pick up just about everything, which makes it a good bet this time of year for decent surf. Unlikely to be 'epic'.

Wind has been inconsistent @ Ventura so far late summer, and water is much cooler than usual. Hopefully that will change.

thanks for all the ideas.

i'm not a fan of san carlos, but i guess i wasn't lucky to be there for a real south swell.

anyways, i'm going to check out peru and see it for myself. i need to make up for the non-event that was this summer.
