I give out bad advice.

So, I'm just back from the doc and got a report of "marked to moderate compression and bone spurs..." It's kind of scary, but my PT said that I should be able to do most things as long as it doesn't hurt.

Does anybody have similar stuff in their neck? Any advice or encouragement is welcome,
Cheers,
Ron Very Happy

Hi Ron,

Back in 2003 I broke one of the "wings" of the C5 vertebra (head landing in less than 2" of water) and I have a slight compression/bulge at C4/C3 level. Bone still sticks out but it doesn't bother me.

I avoid head stands in yoga and hitting the ball with my head playing soccer but that's pretty much it.

Kitesurfing no problem. Surfing can be annoying when I have a long paddle out cause I overstretch the neck and it gets stiff.

My 2 cents: hear more than one Doc and trust a good PT, but at the end of the day just do it..

Good luck,

Gianni

Hi Ron ,
I had C6-7 fused in 82 . Motorcycle accident .
I have reduced movement by minimal amounts . I cant hold my chin against my chest whereas before the fusion I could . I had some sore muscles for a while until the body was used to the change . I work in a physically demanding job , Cat heavy mining equip. repair .
I was told to MOVE it as soon as I could and to go to the limits of movement without excessive pain. It's important to have strong muscles to support the bones! Same goes for the neck muscles .
I have little or no problems with it over the years .
Be very careful . I would research the desired therapy course for your injury . Dr. Dewey the neuro surgeon who performed the surgery told me it was important to "use it with caution asap and then strengthen the support system(muscles ) . This worked for me .
LISTEN to a Doctor and your body not to to a PT . They are there to assist the process not give prognosis .
good luck with it .
JackZ
PS
Sorry I had sore back issues and had a few bad experiences with PT's some think they are doctors which can really harm people . There are good ones out there I know .

Ron what happened?!

Is this new? Bone spurs can be chronic issues and sometimes it is necessary to do something about them? ...especially if they reside in your neck!!! yikes.

I'm also a survivor of a C6-7 fx, I'm about 10yrs. out, and continue to have some chronic issues which I'm seeing a PT and acupuncturist for currently.

For myself, I believe the biggest problem is the loss in range of motion, the sense that your neck and shoulders are bulging like the hunchback of notre dame, and the lack of normal sleep as you have to change your sleeping style post injury (grrr, this one is the most annoying to me!).

Call me or PM me when you get a chance, I can forward some neurosurgeon, PT, acupuncture, etc. recommendations if needed. And do the work to get well!!!

Bad call. ABSOLUTELY Listen to your PT! A doctor can tell you what's wrong by looking at a picture, but a PT can give you much more detail as to methods of recovery, how to increase your range of motion, what to do/not to do, suggest the appropriate exercises, etc. A doctor, while they will try, will not be able to give you the best advice. Prognosis is one thing, recovery is another.

I'm going to Rebecca Street, but I have used Tom before and he is great, but I couldn't get in til too late. So, I opted for Rebecca Street and she is terrific.

I'm going to 2 sessions of P/T per week and have been for about a month and a half.

About ten years ago I was jumping a small gap on a snowboard over rotated and landed heelside and bam on hard snow. Landed on my back and then rolled body board and all over my head. I heard a click and then just held still. I felt no tingles and knew I had just cracked my neck. As it turns out I must have impacted it a little worse than I thought.

So, fast forward and I'm playing tennis in a tournament in Da Hood and I'm serving. I'm a 4.5 and I serve hard, or at least in the past I could.

So, I start getting tight in my neck. By then end of the match I can't even look up and have tingles all up and down the left side of my upper body.

I went to a visiting Dr. orthopedic and begged for cortisone shot. I've had one for the same thing on the other side of my body and it worked. No go! She sends me to P/T.

It get's worse so I go to another Dr. and I get the shot in my left side. It works, but I'm still unable to look up......Shizzle

I'm 46 years old and I'm getting worn out, but not without a fight. I'm in terrible shape as a result of not being able to do my normal routine. Swim, tennis, mnt. bike, and kite. Just Kite so far.

I'm gonna get an MRI and then visit with an Ortho at OHSU. Until then I'm listening to my body and going to Yoga. I've been hesitant to do Yoga, but after watching namaste' on the fitness channel I'm pretty sure it's gonna be fun to go to an actual class, wink, wink nudge, nudge, ya know what I mean. I'm gonna wear a skin tight purple tights and pink socks. I'll take a picture.

Thanks for all of you sharing your stories and advice. It was very nice and made me feel much better to know that there are people out there who have the same thing and are still kicking it hard!

Thanks,
Ron
PS~Coast is going to be good today. I'm going to Jones and if it's blowing at clatsop I'm going there later.
