Anybody ride a 5m Fuel in a lot of wind? What's a good range for a 195 lb kiter and a 6' surfboard?
Thanks,
Eric

you're good from about 40mph - 70mph
I rode that kite for years and I never got overpowered and I'm 150

I'm sure you are just throwing those numbers out to make the point that it's got a big range, but the difference in power between a 40mph and a 70mph wind is enormous.
The power that the wind makes is equal to the SQUARE of its speed.
I'm not sure you'd even need a kite if it was blowing 70, and just getting a large flat object like a kiteboard to the water would be a challenge in itself

SS is coming out with a 6m Fuel in 2011. I had a lot of those days when a 7m was too lit and 5m was too small. I can ride a 7m with power starting around 25mph on a twin tip and I am a bit lighter. On a surfboard, you can probably ride a 6m starting 30+ and 5m starting 35+. I rode the 5m in 40~mph wind with a twin tip and I was pretty powered. I think you can hold down that 5 with a surfboard close to 50mph. But that is just what I think, I would not suggest you to try that in 50mph wind

I think we need to set up a kite folding contest in 50mph wind. You must be on flat ground with unobstructed wind. Judged on speed and how well the kite is folded. Start with an uninflated 10+ meter kite!

the 4.5 RPM ate up the 50mph gusts last time it Nuked out East - though did make some unnatural noises at times...

I love the Fuels but wasn't a big fan of the 5m... It did get the job done, but found the RPM to be better in that size range (both 6m and 4.5m are excellent.)
I think the 5m Fuel was made for Ruben's 50ft kiteloops, not mere mortals crusing around.

Thanks for the information. I actually already own 4.5 and 6m RPMS, which I use a lot and really love. My kids are now going out in very high winds, and we often need two of the same size. Trying to think of more creative ways to do that besides doubling up on the same kind of kite. The Rally 4 might be fun.

There is only so much wind a kite can take. Things start happening at 50 mph - pulleys can break, seems can come undone, bridals can get f*cked. So on and so forth.

Wouldn't a 7-strut Cross Bow be the most stable kite in that kind of wind? Stability would increase the control of the kite...and isn't control the most important factor in really high winds...high winds are always gusty. I don't know the answer, since I avoid crazy wind, myself...don't need to break any more ribs or wreck any more expensive equipment in "combat" conditions. I do like to watch others take on the devil wind, though.
