Fri Jun 25, 10 6:01 pm Tragedy at Stevenson |

A kid(teenager?) apparently drowned at the launch today. Just as I was coming in to land, bunch of people looking in the water, yelling someone just went under. I looked as best I could, couldn't find him. I'm not sure who it was, one of the local teenagers I'm guessing. Terrible. |

STEVENSON, Wash. -- A 26-year-old Stevenson man is missing and presumed drowned after his raft capsized in the Columbia River.
The Skamania Co. Sheriff's Office said that around 4:30 p.m. Friday, the man's raft capsized, and he disappeared under the water while trying to swim to shore. Deputies and dive crews searched for the man into the evening, without luck. The Oregon State Patrol Marine Unit has been asked to help with the search, which will continue at around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Skamania Co. Undersheriff Dave Cox.
Deputies said the man was not believed to have been wearing a personal flotation device. _________________ My kite not pink it's magenta damit! |

Very sad. If there has to be a lesson behind this, one of them has to be know your abilities and make sure you are prepared. You never know when your worst case scenario will be a reality. Condolences to the mans family. |

people standing on the shore watched him go under? none of those people knew how to swim? what a tradegdy!
I was at stevenson one day and watched this kid trying to self rescue for 30 minutes+ he finally left his kite and was swimming in place against the current trying to get back meanwhile 15 or so kiters on the water just watched this kid in trouble. I was done for the day but decided to pump up and launch to rescue this kid. when I got to him he was scared and very thankful. all the bro bras were too cool to lend a hand or maybe sick of having to rescue a person ever time they go out not sure. I was baffeled by the inconsideration! Last edited by waynepjh on Sat Jun 26, 10 9:28 am; edited 1 time in total |

Sat Jun 26, 10 9:19 am Really sad and don't plan on kiting Stevie today. |

Apparently he was a local guy and was there with his younger brother. The family was there last night. It was very sad. Its crazy that someone would go out on a raft and not know how to swim. He was in 10 ft of water exactly in our jump spot.
They closed off the Stevenson kite launch yesterday and today while they search for him with the added state divers. Hopefully they find him soon for the family. |

Carol just called the Sheriff's office and they are still searching. Looking on the Kite-cam it looks like the trucks that are their belong to the search and rescue team. Can also see a boat out on the water. No word on when the beach will be open.

Very unlucky, it was one of those rare moments when none of the regular kite crew were there. Just some kids on shore & me and one other guy on the water. A few regulars way upwind & unaware what was going on. Had it happened 10 minutes earlier or later there would have been lots of experienced guys there. Damned shame. |

Rescue ops ended around 6 PM Sat. Saw the boat take off upriver. Bernard let me launch from his house, little sketchy but great Stevie late night. Carol and Tony were out don't know where they launched from. Search and rescue said that they were going to close it off Sun also. |

Shitty. I feel really bad for his family and friends. A very good friend of my family was a Coast Guard diver on Crystal Lake in Michigan, and he always had to do at least a couple recovery dives each summer, in one case a relative of my aunt. Always sucks to lose somebody to the drink... _________________ "Resist much, obey little."

No trucks or boats in the cam this morning. Anyone know if they will have the launch closed again Sunday? |
