I was on the beach then the snatch patch and looking for a local to launch my shizzle, thanks Mary Beth, nice mask!!
Anyways, I was grabbing kites and running my full sensory kook-dar, similar to radar, but more effective used properly.
I see Bambam tangled up in a kite. Then I realize he is yelling for me to grab the kite. I run out and grab the kite and pull it in and bury it with sand and wrap the bar.
Ya know the fact is that it's really cool when somebody like Bambam grabs a loose kite and then brings it in.

 its was a magic window yesterday for wind great swell BAM BAM took one for the team to run that kite in not sure why the dude was having trouble pero he was flushing fast!! KITE TEAM ASSEMBLE!!!!!! |

Just doing my best to regain my title as the Gorge Lifeguard. Funny, but when I went back up to the bridge, I also had a wee bit of a situation that required a rescue to the Washington side. A big thanks to Jim Bison for the pull back to my kite and board recovery. Lesson... do not take off the boots when you have kiters like Bison around. He could have pulled me back to my kite really fast with my board on, and the entire self rescue portion would not have had to happen.
Hiked up the bank and stumbled onto five Scottish paddlers who got me back around to my car faster than it took Bison to get back in! Thanks guys, and I now owe the Karma bank again.
Bulae, thanks for grabbing that kite. I was getting pissed at all the people walking back and forth whom did not bother to put their kite down and come grab the one I was bringing in. Come on peeps, be like Bulae... and pay attention out there.

This guy's got more karma than even he's aware of. 1994, I'm stuck on a reef in front of Honeybuns with a broken mast.... BamBam to the rescue. Never met the guy before, never saw him again during that Maui trip.

Props to Ken Lucas, Tony B., Bam Bam, and Sean. I've only been kiting for one year but I've seen each of these guys chip in for rescues or board retrievals many times.

Hood River should wake up and provide a kite ranger. Somebody who could hang out on the spit helping people to land and launch with a small boat or jet ski ready for rescue.
The parking fees could pay salary and equipment. |
Hey Idhr: Usually there are only a few bad eggs in the basket. Most others are plenty helpful. Not to rain on your praise for Ken, Tony, Bam or Sean, (they are selfless) but I think you need a few more years of kiting so you can witness a few more of the helpful people out there and kind acts conducted out there.
I totally disagree with your idea of having a land and launch person out there with a jet ski. Not only would this undermine the KB lesson industry thing. This would make the SB even more of a cluster fuck than it already is with under skilled newbies/kooks.
I can just imagine the mindset and thought process of a newbie/kook with the scenario you suggested: "Well, I really shouldn't be out there on the water with this unpredictable wind. One minute it is perfect 20 mph and the next it is nil and then it is blowing to 35 mph. I guess it will be ok even though I can't self rescue or retrieve my board in the event I become separated from it because there is someone with a jet ski and they will be keeping an eye on me along with the 50 other newbie/kooks."
See my point, this would breed dependency and complacency. There should be a skill level barrier of entry to "thin the herd". If you can't do X, than you don't belong out there. It applies to a lot of sports (climbing mountains comes to mind), but that can be discussed in another post.
All that being said, good winds to ya and everyone else out there. Remember to "pay it forward" and keep an eye out for others on the water. |
