The following is from an 'onsite' report for rowena today off of iwindsurf
"9:45 AM: E. Coli discharge levels at The Dalles wastewater plant are exceeding permitted levels. If you are headed to Rowena, perhaps somewhere else might be better. Explanatory signs will be posted at Doug's and Rowena soon... "
What the F is up with this? How far down river is considered "safe"??

gotta love the ARMPIT though the 'armpit of the gorge' doesn't really reflect the source of the e coli. |

Here is a message sent out to the CGWA members, forwarding it here:
Quote: | Hi Windsurfers-
We have heard from OMI, the company that runs The Dalles wastewater treatment plant, that as a result of an upset event that caused an excess of e coli to be released, the river is closed from The Dalles to Rowena.
What happened?
According to a press release sent out by the City of The Dalles, an equipment installation took longer than expected, causing a back up of fluids. This event caused higher than usual levels of e coli to be released into the river.
What are they doing now?
At this point they are required to do water samples every 4 hours. When they get 5 consecutive "clean" samples, the river will reopen through this stretch.
How long will the river be closed for?
They anticipate that they will reopen this stretch around Monday, May 3rd. We will let you know as soon as we hear that it's reopened.
Good thing it's windy out east today! Sounds like a weekend to spend at the Wall.

CITY OF THE DALLES
Department of Public Works
1215 West First Street
The Dalles, Oregon 97058
PRESS RELEASE
DATE: April 30, 2010
TOPIC: Update on Wastewater Treatment Plant Upset
CONTACT: Public Works Department (541) 296-5401
FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATELY
The City of The Dalles Wastewater Treatment Plant is continuing to discharge effluent that exceeds the plant’s limit for E. coli. The second set of re-samples indicates that the processes are improving but are not yet back under control after the upset that was caused, in part, by plant modifications needed to allow for installation of a new boiler.
Additional resources have been brought in to assist with operational needs. A second sludge truck is being utilized from the City of Hood River to aid in reducing the amount of materials that accumulated in the treatment plant during the boiler installation.
Samples will continue to be taken at the treatment plant until E. Coli counts are back within permit limits.
Signs have been placed at locations of public river access along both sides of the river, from The Dalles Riverfront Park to West Mayer Park boat launch on the Oregon side and from the Dallesport Boat Launch to the Klickitat Sandbar on the Washington side. The signs say: “ Warning - Contaminated Water - No water contact” and give phone numbers to call for information.
The department is in communication with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and local health department officials to coordinate response. Questions can be directed to the Public Works Department office at (541) 296-5401.

Thanks for the info/update!! Hope they clean up the river soon!! Ain't we lucky this isn't an oil spill like the one down in the Gulf of Mexico. That's one big mess. I hope they get it under control somehow. !! I just hope there is no OIL under the gorge anywhere!!! _________________ SAY WHAT YOU MEAN, MEAN WHAT YOU SAY |
