This was a good article for beginners and a nice refresher for everyone after the winter break.

not rotor.

Lol. Do you just not believe in the existence of rotor?

It could possibly be cloud suck, but its likely rotor. Here's why:

Its definitely not thermals. He's kiting under a solid grey sky.

Cloud suck unlikely, doesn't look like a CuNim kinda day. I can't see enough of the sky to be sure though. The trees near him aren't even wiggling as he gets lifted.

Mountain terrain with lots of obstructions around.

See how rapidly he gets picked up and then drops just as quickly shortly after? He didn't send the kite. He didn't dig his edge. He just got grabbed.

imo, I would have to say its just ridge lift or a gust blowing up slope suddenly increasing the amount of ridge lift. Sometimes With wind blowing up a slope you can jump at the bottom and land on top of the slope doing a step up jump I call it. You have to be well powered for that. The steeper the slope the stronger the lift. The guy in the video kites over to the base of a wall or old building built into a steep slope where there surely will be a lot of lift and makes a quick transition with kite overhead! Seems obvious, but with out being there its just a guess as to what happened!

check this accidental loop while getting a 50 mph hour gust! 5 meter kite! omg!

Not a bad assessment. In the original vid I posted, the action looks pretty significant and sudden for ridge lift tho, and it also drops him pretty quick. Ridge lift is pretty steady. That's why I like to fly in it.

"Gusts" are usually caused by turbulence, thermals, or virga.

One way to learn about turbulence (rotor) would be to approach the head from the south while kiting at Manzanita or Pacific City on a strong north day. At a certain point its going to start to feel strange and "gusty". Keep going and you're asking to get yanked and slammed.

I have two friends who've learned about rotor the hard way while kiting on land. One even got a life-flight ride from Pacific city back to Portland.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of the "mystery" accidents we hear about where people unexpectedly get lifted and slammed are from people kiting in rotor.
