IMO, one of the coolest thing about the internet is the ability for anyone to submit content and programs (eg. craigslist, windonthewater, etc).
I hope this type of restrictive interface does not change the internet and make it more content controlled (like TV).
The best thing you can do is to support Net Neutrality (be vocal with your representatives). Help the FCC have the power to make the companies not degrade your bandwidth For us consumers this might be the most important issue at hand.
I don't get why make an app to a specific OS at all..it's an old model and it will change very soon (make the network work better, faster, and keep net neutrality).
According to systems design (for the benefit of end users and innovation) Development should be:
develop in your preferred language, each platform has interpreters, run on any phone.
That is how you achieve real innovation, give bargaining powers to consumers.

I can see both sides of the debate, but I think in the end consumers will probably win because apps developed by hand for each platform are going to perform better than apps developed in some kind virtual layer.
We've noticed in developing for IPhone and Blackberry (and Andriod soon) that there are subtle differences in how elements like the GPS work on the different platforms. If we didn't program specifically for each platform the end result probably wouldn't have worked well for users.

..but you're still thinking of apps. It should all be part of the cloud.
This is dependent on reliable network, which will surely be the result...
if you have a reliable network you do not need individual apps, it'll be run remotely.
In terms of subtle differences: This is why we need a standard. If you have standards and open development, you get real competition. All hail a strong and healty FCC.
