kt I have kited rowena for a couple of years now! I used to go to the secret spot before that got shut down. For some reason kiting at rowena has not been popular maybe because of the rocky shelf but compared to launches like stevenson it is not that bad! When I kite there solo I use cables that are already bolted into the rocks for launching. I use a static setup downwind of the windsurfers and have never had a problem! When I am on the water I usually go right to dougs west for my session. |

I'd like to witness this launching procedure. . .because I've scouted out that area too and the shelf and rocks turned me off. The consequences of a bad launch would not be pretty. What do you do when your are landing your kite if you do not have anyone to land it for you? Sail to shore and dump the kite on the water (kiter on the south shore of Columbia, kite landing North onto water)?
I never poleboarded or shall I say I never got past the water starts, so I can't seem to remember why Doug's is such a cherished sailing spot. Is it due to the strong, consistent winds and or does it have some good swell as well?
I know that SS, just downwind, doesn't really have good swell, but I've never sailed up-wind to Doug's from SS. I just remember great flat water at SS and some cranking current from the bend in the river and early season water flow. |

I think plenty of people that ride Lyle don't post on here too much, but just go ride. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

Doesn't Jonathan just kite across from near the boat ramp? Why not just suss out the easterly launch and do the same? |

Rowena is an ok spot, launch sucks no matter how to look at it. there is a small bay at the east end that offers some safety for a bad launch or when your alone and coming it to dump the kite and wrap up in reletively little wind. great sessions to be had there with very few other kiters and windsurfers, its just not used that much. great place for a family due to some facilities.
Dougs only gets big swell on big days of 35+ and has to be consistent, back in the day it was a great wave spot for the 3.5 days (thats poleboarding lingo )
late in the season when the water drops there is usually a large sandbar at dougs that could be used to rig up, water has to be low however. otherwise, yea not much space. |

Klickitat County Commissioner Dave Sauter says that the land from the Boat Ramp, including the boat ramp itself, west to the Klickitat, is all Klickitat County Public Land. The county is very interested in providing a shuttle service, the best bet if we wanted to move this forward is to talk with Dave Sauter and the Lyle Community Council first. There is a homeless camp. Park at your own risk.

The YNLE bought this land from the Conservation for Public Lands about 3-4 years back. While they haven't closed the entire lyle point off, some members are less than friendly to non-native visitors. I've been f'd with while sup'ing from that launch. And yes, there is a homeless camp there, a large native camp especially during fishing season, and a fair reputation for car break-ins.
A better option would be to wait for the forest service to finish their new parking lot on the east side of the Klickitat for the bike trail. Hike down to the river to the north and paddle your a$$ down there.
But, I gotta ask: Is it really worth it when there are plenty of places where it is better to kite. And how come none of you ever visit Doug's? |

The rocks at rowena are not that bad when launching/landing with friends but I wouldn't want to do a solo launch. some of the pole boarders have been pretty chill with us there, some have been assholes. It is fairly gusty though. More so than the SS. |

Oh , That would depend on some businessman or politician getting some serious under the table kickbacks and their name on it though . Citizens can be starving in the street , but if theres horn blowing involved they would be on board .Kinda like three cruise ships to house the 15000 security personal for the Olympics recently, for a mere 900 million cost to taxpayers , while only blocks away there are homeless people who couldn't afford to be educated , blah blah blah ,
Point is , the grass is always greener on the other side , eh ?
Good luck with all your efforts to keep areas available for these activities guys !
Sorry it's early
Jack
ps
those homeless are probably available for parking security , Ha |

By "homeless camp", do you mean?:
(1) Seasonal Indian Fish Camp
(2) Railroad associated Hobo Junction
(3) Migrant worker "Hooverville"
(4) Local Good-ole-boy drink'in hangout
(5) Crack and Ice-heads
(6) Foreclosure victims
(7) Squatters |

( heroin and six inches of trash.
A couple of tents, trailers and strung outs.
Lyle community council has asked the sheriff to do something about it, but they were told it's yakama land. Up to tribal police unless there is a threat to personal safety, like guns and such. |

wouldn't a shuttle service have to be a completely under the the table kind of deal to avoid all sorts of legislation? Just 'cos you have a boat you can't just set up a ferry service without having to go through an enormous amount of red tape. A million different interest groups are going to pop up out of the sand when they find some one is charging people to ferry them into protected wetland habitat.
Is Brian reading this thread - tell us what's going to happen? |
