Are you planning on visiting Hood River this summer? If so, I hope you are a better kiter than me. The Hood River sandbar gets very crowded, especially on the weekends. I try to go only on during the week and I am still somewhat in the way. The people are very friendly and seemingly quite tollerent of beginners like me. They are even willing to offer advice or help. It gets real tight laying out lines, launching and landing. If you can, sail away from the sandbar as quickly as possible and stay out a ways. Hood River has the most consistant winds, compared to the Portland or lower Columbia River, so I have done most of my sailing there. I have windsurfed up wind from the Sandbar, around Wells Island and it is really nice. Not crowded, nice wind and spectacular scenery. I am still working on sailing up wind, so Wells Island remains a goal. I don’t want to get out in the main channel until my skills are better, so I turn a little early, give way to kiters headed out and try to stay away from people taking lessens downwind. If you are a beginner, don’t be a cheapskate like me and only take a few lessons. Take some additional lessens from a Hood River instructor. They are all very nice people and can really advance you quickly. So thanks to all the sandbar people for being nice about it. See you this summer. _________________ I may be old, but I am slow |
