Thu Feb 04, 10 10:56 am Winter kiting.... where to ride. |
|
|
Hey guys,
New to portland. Origionally from the midwest so kited on a lot of frozen lakes and had some nice wave days on lake superior. Really excited to ride the gorge, but i was wondering if there's any good snow kiting. I was checking out the video from idaho. Anything like that closer to portland?.... Mt. Hood have anything? I'd be up for carpooling if anyone wants to share their knowledge

snow kiting pretty hard to come by close-in hence the pilgrimages to ID.
You can ride at Rooster right now. Looked pretty sick on the way to work this morning. If you can ride in superior than it won't seem that cold to you.
what part of PDX are you in?

ahhhh....the Midbest.
where abouts?
anyways, like MNKYboy said, Idaho, Bend, or occasional low-elevation days in the eastern gorge for snow kiting..
but if you kite Superior, then you should be good to go out here for the water, depending on your skill level...
coast will be warm compared to Superior...gorge, should be about right....

I'm moving into an appartement in beaverton for three weeks.... after that, who knows. I did bring all of my wetsuits, so i'm ready to get wet. Another question, i've just got a 12 meter cabrinha omega (like to fly it in 15 to 25). I'm guessing with the gorge winds i'd be best off getting another smaller kite. Any suggestions on size to complete my two kite quiver? I'm 175 lb. I also want to be able to ride on the coast and from what i understand the winds there are generally less than in the gorge. Hoping my 12 meter will be enough.

Another sconnie! niiice
I went to school in Eau Claire and the rents live in Lake Geneva-area.
Used to make trips to Minocqua and up to Bessemer in the UP every year to stay at the cabin....
Only kited Lake Superior once and it was awesome!
Northwoods at it's finest...
I can taste the Leinies now......
I'd say grab an 8m at your weight....should get you out in most conditions with your 12m and 8.

Cool wilso810, I'm in the process of doing the same. We live in Chaska right now and want to move out to Portland in the near future. I was also wondering about closer in snow kiting options, but I guess water will have to do.
Where is Roosters? I've only kited the Gorge and Lake Floras. Can't wait for a summer spent in paradise (compared to the Twin Cities). I will miss those epic days on Superior, but the coast looks killer. Should be a "good" substitute.

Biggest understatement ever.
Wilso.. FYI get the hell out of beaverton as soon as possible. Beaverton is a suburb of Portland, and its pretty damn suburb-y. But if you like strip malls and corporate restaurants and SUV's then you may very well find a home in Beaverton.
