Headed down to Peru and Chile in a week and can't really bring all my kite gear, since I am already at my 2 bag limit.... so I was wondering if anyone knew of any kite shops or kiters down there to rent some stuff from? Or spots in general...

Much obliged

Contact Jose at jose@perufly.com . Paracas rocks! This time of year you are pretty much guaranteed wind and flat water. Some great surf spots are near too. Regardless, Jose has the low down on the local action....

take crisp perfect $100 bills for peru. helps when trying to exchange currency. if not perfect they will devalue the rate or in many cases not exchange.

Short article buried in the front section of the Oregonian this morning, page A6:

A couple of thousand tourists have been stranded at Machu Picchu by mudslides taking out the train tracks. The government *may* send helicopters to evacuate them.

An adventure I'm sure.

I was in Chile for the month of February two years ago.

I spent 3 weeks camping in Guanaquieros and driving to Puclaro (1 hour drive), but there are some really nice and cheep places to stay about 1/4 mile from the kite beach in Puclaro. Its a really small village so you will need to drive into La Serena to get all your weekly provisions (1/2 hour drive). The wind cranks 25-30 there 365 days a year so all you will need is a 9 or 7m.

Puclaro

You will also want to check out Pichidangui on the coast (about 2.5 hours south of La Serena). Really beautiful fishing town with a 3 mile wide bay that gets nice side on wind.

Pichidangui

There are some shops that spend a moth or two in Puclaro doing lessons but they are all based out of Santiago. Ask for Juan in Puclaro....he is the only full time local that runs a small school....he might have rental gear.

The next 200 miles south has a really tough coast line with heavy rips and currents. No one swims there so kiting is out of the question....plus most of that stretch gets socked in with a heavy marine layer that kills the wind. Head about 3 hours south of Santiago to Matanzas for some epic swell...it also has a few flat water bays close by if you want that.

Drink lots of Pisco in Chile not Peru...its 10 times better. Take a trip to Andacollo, its a town up in the Mountains outside of La Serena. Go in the afternoon check it out have dinner and then drive up the rest of the mountain to the star observatory. Chile has one of the highest concentrations of observatorys due to their clear skys. I could see the milkyway every night and hundreds of shooting stars.

Probably have some more info floating around so hit me up if you have any Q's
