When would you say the season begins at Hood River? at Sauvie's island?

Its "Sauvie" Island http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-9442-0.html
Spike wrote: | Sauvie Island common misconceptions:
Misconception#1
It is spelled Sauvies
False. This implies a reference to multiple geographic locations, each by the name of Sauvie.
Misconception#2
It is spelled Sauvie's
False. This implies that the island is property of Sauvie. "Laurent Sauvie was a French Canadian employee of the Hudson Bay Company.
Sauvie oversaw dairy farms on the island for the Hudson Bay Company and supplied goods for Fort Vancouver." - sauvieisland.org
The island was named after him; it therefore does not imply ownership by either him or any of his kin.
Misconception#3
"Its only 15 minutes form work!"
False, it takes at least 15 minutes to drive from the Sauvie Island bridge to the north end of Reeder Beach. Google Maps |

Tough to say - every year is a little different. Last year I started kiting mid to late march - but there wasn't regular winds - sort of had to chaise the wind down. By April there were more regular winds. By May the shit was on for the most part.
But Kiting in March and April is cold man - I have to use a 5/3. There are some polar bears out there that rock out with shorties in april.

Most people say that the season gets started on May 1st in Hood River. Some years my season has started in March.

For me, it depends on how thick your wetsuit is.

we can get some sweet east days in april (rooster is good)... air temps might go 70+. water is still 40 but you don't freeze getting in/out wetsuit so good to go
typically not much beach to work with in the early season. bigger swell with the first west winds though

March for the thick wetsuit guys. Like moto said, winds are not that predictable and the water is COLD! Sauvie doesn't real get started until June or July and by the end of august it's pretty much over. But that doesn't stop people from flocking out there everyday to keep the lawn nice and short.

Let's have some kind of contest where people guess when the season will open.... Isn't it about time for that anyway?

What is this thing called "season"??? Closer to Summer there are more rideable days per month, but you can ride every month of the year. ( 27 months with at least one session/month. Woo Hoo!)
Spike, the name on the map may be "Sauvie" but it's been called "Sauvie's" for at least 40 years that I know of. Probably a lot longer. Many places have common use names different than what's on the map... "Wapato Island" was the original name, then Sauve. (Yes, that's spelled correctly.) The Post Office was "Souvies Island Post Office" before "Sauvie". Common use names are often used instead of the official name. For example: "The Gorge", "D.C.", "America", and close to your heart I know, "The Ditch".

Vancouver, WA has been named that way for even longer but everyone I know calls it Vantucky. So is the official name now Vantucky?
