keeping with the theme of dramatic rescues...
paraglider goes down in the ocean on north side of cape lookout: http://cgvi.uscg.mil/media/main.php?g2_itemId=733797 I know the pilot and he told me about the rescue, pretty interesting stuff. they got the call and made it from tongue pt (astoria) to cape lookout in 18min the woman was already in the water, wrapped up, and washing in and out of the cave. there was another paraglider pointing her out to the pilot which was acknowledged. the guy kept flying around the cave keeping the helicopter from getting in there despite efforts by the crew and pilot to wave him off. finally the pilot gave him the proper "salute" and he figured it out - woman's body temp was in the high 80's, one lung half full of water... she's tough and still keeps up with the pilot, he can't believe she's alive actually.
kook takes a rental canoe out for a surf in the seaside estuary, big day - he actually got sucked out to sea - I saw this one live, Tom and I watched the canoe get pushed by the river out into the break, which would then wash back in, then go out, then in... finally picked up on the beach that night, aluminum canoes are tough!: http://cgvi.uscg.mil/media/main.php?g2_itemId=701766

Nice find
"Oh god this wave just hammered them both"
amazing they weren't crushed by the basket - a 6lb surfboard will break an arm...
18min from Astoria to Cape Lookout (sounds too fast - 200mph?) _________________ Go Deep!

enjoyed that convo with the gentleman regarding the proper 'salute'
a paraglider in water with a gift wrapped pilot is certain death 99.9% of the time

Yeah, the 18 min was probably the difference.
UH-60s (Blackhawks in the Army, Seahawks in the Navy and Jayhawks in the CG) have a listed top speed of 160kts |

Glad that paraglider person survived. . . got a question though. There are obviously costs involved running search and rescue ops. I think i heard once that it almost cost about 10k per hr to run one of the bigger helcopters the CG uses (that was like 10 yrs ago and that was factoring in everything, including the kitchen sink).
If one is rescued by the CG via boat and or helicopter, is that person responsible for costs incurred?
At times there are acts of god that cannot be prevented and at times rescues are made when someone didn't use commonsense. Thx for your comments. . . |

the cost is hard to figure out since they seem to be out flying most days if they don't have someone to rescue. |

If you can't be bothered to carry a $5 locator to climb Mt.Hood..... You should be charged.... IMHO. |
