| I'm considering moving to Washington to find a house on some acreage for cheap enough. But I am concerned where the closest place to kite. |

Kooks begets Kooks. . . BG: Land of the kooks, meth brewers and decapited bodies found in Safeway dumpsters from drug deals gone bad. Go for something closer to i-5 and the Columbia. Seriously, never heard of anything or seen anything good come from BG except PKH's designated van driver for his Bach party.
If you have a boat, there is potential to kite at Merwin and Yale resevoirs. Actually, Yale looks like it has land launch potential at and around the town of Couger, and the views of Helens are incredible! Never done it though on ground or from a boat. |

Also the Lewis River just before cougar. Launch at the park and its wide open. Watch for tree stumps sticking out of the water
South winds get a venturi effect right there from the canyon. Super cold but is flat water minus the stump dodging |

If location is not an issue there are decent deals going on all over the Gorge right now on both sides of the river.

| I did not know you could kite in wood land where do you go? The Lewis river sounds sketchy. So Ridge field is better than Battle ground? I'm trying to stay close to Portland most of my work is there. My other option is Scappoose. |

Battleground has some school socio-economic problems like really rich and really poor kids, devout Christians vs non-Christians disagreeing over school curriculum. If those are not issues for you, it is a fine place to live. Vancouver - Clark County has great schools, low property taxes and no sales tax Portland nearby. Generally people are more the same, fewer of the Battleground problems. We enjoy going over to east Portland for a more diverse crowd.
Yale reservoir would be okay, except for the crowds on a nice summer day, jet skiis, etc. Only one small beach that is open enough. Not really room for a kite.
Woodland bar is actually fine. I used to windsurf there. Nice beach and long runs. The problem is, you would be the only kiter there. Same at Kalama, also fine. Lots more fun to join the local kiters at Jones Beach. Not that far from Vancouver.
It is windy much more often in the Gorge. From east Vancouver, it is not that far from Stevenson. I think this would be the optimal location if you want to kite a lot and work in Portland. |

You can see it on Google earth. Go thru downtown Woodland, all the way out to the river. Go up river. There is a spot past the last house or go all the way to the end of the river area. There is an undeveloped parking area. You can also 4 wheel out to the beach. This is actually not all that close to Ridgefield road wise because you have to go all the way out to the freeway and then all the way out to the river.
Scappoose is close either to Sauvie's Island or Jones Beach. There is not always enough wind at these locations. |

Sauvie Island sucks for wind, but Jones beach blows most of the summer. I'd say about as often as the Gorge probably. Just the sensor reads low and few people ride there so no one knows about it. Consider East Portland to Troutdale or Camas as other options closer to the Gorge. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

I found Jones to be pretty rad. I'm in Vancouver. It's a little further than some gorge spots, but there's endless beach to launch. Just watch out for the rednecks running over your bar with their quads... |
