Fri Dec 04, 09 5:52 pm Question about the 09 Lunacy |
|
|
Was hoping to get some input from people who ride the 09 Lunacy. I know its an advanced board. What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses. What size would be good for a 185 pound rider?
I would like to demo it - but I think I want it before the next season starts so it can collect dust while I wish I was on the water?
How does it handle in chop? Is it easier to keep an edge in strong winds than say the SX? How is the float? How does it handle in gusting conditions - going from one extreme (under powered) to the other (way over powered).
Would appreciate some honest input.
And the all important question - how the heck can I get a go jo on it?

Moto, wider tips make it easier to load and pop, simply because you're board is touching more water. The straighter the edge, the more wild its going to be in chop.
I think you'd be happier with the SX. It's a well balanced board between being a good freestyle board as well as being a good freeride board. It has a curved outline for good turns, still loads and pops well. The SX didn't seem to stop tucker from throwing down hard on it.

| It will make you a flat water snob, but its a great board. Lots of low end and pop. For all around go for one of the other shapes like Forrest suggests.

I think that the only thing stopping tucker from throwing down harder are his straps!

| If you're looking for something between a Lunacy and SX, try the Misfit as well.

I ride the sx and I like the way it carves on waves. It's predictable and fun to make carve back and forth. The 137 is perfect for me at 220lbs. It's got tons of pop, but I think it's best for in the gorge waves, as they are close together and lot's of chop. It can go up wind really well too.
You should demo em all

What do you guys think of the Misfit?
I have an '09 Lunacy 132 and love it, but, do want something a little friendlier for all around riding. Its odd, though, once you ride the Lunacy it is really tough to walk away from its speed and upwind ability. Other boards don't compare...but it is like driving a sports car. The suspension is a little stiff.

I own a 2008 129 lunacy and a 2009 132 lunacy.
other boards I've tried are. 07 spleene rip 34, 08 spleene rip 34, 09 naish haze 145ish?, 07 underground flx 32, 04 litewave 128, 07 spleene monsterdoor,
I'm probably about your size @ 6'1" and 185lbs with size 12 feet
I absolutely love the 132 lunacy board. its awesome for load and pop. great low end. my friend Vinh nick named it the mini glide for its light wind performance.
I think the 132 handles chop well. the 129 is a little easier to cut through chop with but it also pearls easier when I start getting tired.
my biggest complaints about the lunacy are that it really does not like to carve and it has a fair amount of spray.
but, if you want to go fast, go big pop big and carve up wind like a madman. you'll probably like it a lot.
oh yeah....flatwater is ooh so sweet on that board too.
definitely try one a few times though. the first 3-4 sessions on the 132 lunacy I hated compared to the spleene boards but since then it has really grown on me a lot to become my favorite board that really works for light to nuke conditions.
129 is very good for medium to nuke conditons too.
one last thing. I switched out the slingshot doyle pads and straps for something with more heel support. (ocean rodeo bliss)

I just got the 2010 Lunacy 135 about a month ago and I have ridden it about 9 times now. I weigh 215 and I had an 151 SX and a 137 SX and I can tell you it replaced both those boards. I've ridden it in the surf and in really choppy flat water, I have had it in 15kts to about 30kts , overpowered and Gusty. I don't think you would be disappointed in the least. Its a really edgy board and goes upwind really well for me, better than the the other SX boards I had. The bindings fit really well as also. They really wrap around your foot for a solid feel.
