| Having researched the kiting opportunities in Costa Rica, I think the conditions are too extreme for my level of kiting. We are now looking at Belize which seems to be a more mellow environment for kiting. Have heard about a few of the different Cayes that offer some kiting but am concerned about the amount of coral in the area. Sounds like it is everywhere. Any suggestions on nice sandy spots with accomodations close to launch areas with other activities close by. Ben and Vickie

I posted this to my friends may in May
"Back from Belize and wish you all could have been there.
I am not saying that it is the best kiting spot ever but it is pretty darn good.
I had booked a place that I had stayed at 10 years ago and then find out later that is now the location of the only kite business in the country. Just a small stand where they rent equipment and give windsurfing and kiting lessons. I rented the 2009 Cab Convert 12 and Switchblade 14.
The wind was blowing over 15mph for 5 of the 8 days I was there but I only kited 2 days as I really went there for the scuba diving and to go to guatamala to see Tikal the Mayan site.
The water was near 88 in most areas because it is so shallow but the bottom is all sand so very turqoius and clean.
Air temp was 78 at 6AM and 84 by 3pm. Wind blew the same all the time so on the days I kited, I started really early(before breakfast)as the launch area was only 2 line lengths from my villa patio. Also kited in moon light as it was very clear that night.
Best part about the area is that Anita could sit at the beach bar or at the pool or hot tub and watch me kite and was still close enough to the waters edge that I could come over and ask her to get me something from the room with out having to put the kite down.
Also there is only 1 local kiter besides the 2 people that work at the kite stand so don't expect to see any other kiters period.

Just contact sailsports see http://sailsportsbelize.com/
also here is a weather link for weekly forcast.

The wind does not really turn on there till Jan.
Lots to do like jungle hikes, Mayan ruin tours, cave exploration and of course the 2nd biggest barrier reef in the world.
One great way to do a down winder is to take the local water taxi up wind with the misses, then have her take your stuff back on the taxi. I did a 2 hour down winder but there is 16 miles of shore line so you can spend all day if you have the strength.

Tony--Where's the fishing pole in the last shot, you look ready to reel in a Tarpon?
Rip it up! I've gotta get my arse down there and hit the Latina Kite Scene.

Don't go it sucks
Not really, My wife and I go there every year. We love it. We ride a 10/12 "c" kite.
It is a bigger kite spot. Last year we got 18 out of 24 days. How ever it does run in cycles we've noticed it's 4-7 days on and 2-3 days off. If you don't do anything but kite you might not like Belize. We dive fish and hike so it's easy to find stuff to do on the no wind days. It's also not exactly beginner friendly because of the boat traffic and docks. For advanced rider's check out the full moon, it's a great time to get a session. Last year we rode for 3 hours after dark in the full moon. Few places in the world you can do that.
It does offer flat water waves and is shallow near shore.
Check out the write up we did in the The Kiteboarder Magazine.

This spot can be epic but there are no wind days as well. It's no La Vantana in that you will never ride your 7m there. Also there are not huge wide open beaches, the launches are tight but very manageable for a intermediate rider.
My wife and I will be there from the middle of February through March. Would love some company on the 20 mile down winder's to Caye Calker.
This spot doesn't get super dependable till late February then it's good till May and some times longer.
