Yep,

Unless you plan on living solo, joining up with a like minded $700 a month hottie or trustafarian you will end up like the rest of us finding life getting a lot more expensive. Kids??? Dont even think about it.

I always wonder though what happens to all the guys and gals living in tents in baja or those that have no real job skills/career when it comes time to retire. Seriously? Can you live your whole life without really saving anything?

I applaud them for living an unconventional lifestyle and think "Man they either have balls, no foresight or a trust fund. I am never sure which and I guess it really does not matter.

Here's a mouthful ,
Most young guys don't realize what a good woman/partner? Confused can add to their
lives ,children is one of them for sure , there is nothing more selfish than having children ,your own little admirers ,,for life,. Seeing thier children and having them for grand admirers is even better Cool .
I love my family more than anything ,
even me

Doing what comes naturally can build a fortune in this country.

I think most folks do whatever they are doing when the kids come along ,
because there is not much time for anything else at that point ,making the best of it is a personailty trait .
I claim no sense of the greater scope of life ,I would have worked much longer had the job lasted ,because by the time I was 40 I had it down and was making some bag.
But with no work I was sure glad to have some fun hobbies

Being conservative with your money is a very green idea for the planet
crap goes up in the sky everytime you buy some thing new
or exhale for that matter Arrow

I think it does matter everyone likes to feel needed
being productive feels good ,even if it's just fixing an old boat. Confused

We live in the greatest time in history enjoying the benefits of the "I want it better"
mentality and if the "better" is more simple so be it.

Living within my means is a goal I hope to never attain
Remember
"Never do anything you are sure you can do"

Aesop Rock says-

We the American working population
Hate the fact that eight hours a day
Is wasted on chasing the dream of someone that isn't us
And we may not hate our jobs,
But we hate jobs in general
That don't have to do with fighting our own causes.
We the American working population
Hate the nine to five day-in/day-out
But we'd rather be supporting ourselves
By being paid to perfect the pasttimes
That we have harbored based solely on the fact
That it makes us smile if it sounds dope.

Fumble outta bed and stumble to the kitchen.
Pour myself a cup of ambition.
And yawn and stretch, my life is a mess,
And if I never make it home today, God bless.

Music lyrics aside. I'm happy someone brought this up. I'm 22 have been working 40 hr weeks for 2 years now. I think it might be destroying my brain.

So much more than 40 hours are REALLY involved. Getting up, commuting, unpaid lunch, ect. Thinking of what I buy with my earnings disgusts me. Caloric consumption for being able to have energy to burn while working, car payment/insurance/gas for driving mainly to work and back. The whole scenario just doesn't leave me with a whole hell of a lot to look forward to. All so I can make people who work 'above me' profit...

Glad to finally have an outlet for these thoughts of mine I've not been able to shut off. Thanks guys.

Be thankfully you only work 40 hours a week and don't try to obsess about the realities of living in the US and all the costs. If your job does not involve doing things your passionate about then I would suggest working towards getting a job that does. Its not easy by any stretch of the imagination but its not that hard either if you put your mind to it.

Don't get too down, those people that you are currently making money for were once in your exact shoes. Think , plan, do, my friend.

Blowhard makes a very good point about children. Children are THE most demanding job you will ever have and at the same time, the most rewarding. Of all the things I have seen and done that have made me smile, they are all pale in comparison to the feeling of having my 3yo jump up and down and scream DADDY HOME when I walk in the door from work. It really does melt your heart and makes all the other thing in life seem pretty damn trivial (which in the end, they are).

Kids are demanding, expensive, and tireless and I find myself sighing allot when my plans get side tracked for the needs of the family but if you ever wondered what it is like to truly love someone, try holding your baby in your arms or comfort your kid when he is sick. Its pretty powerful, ingrained in your genes shit really. But I suspect that in your twilight years, if you managed to not totally screw up your children, they will be one of the only meaningful things you ever did in your life.

ya I was thinking the same thing about the 40 hours
The way I got around it,,
was to
get up at 1 am
(drive by some of the crew that worked for me standing outside the bar smoking )

load trucks until daylight when the crew got there

log 8-9 hours and reload the same trucks 3 more times

firewatch and turn wrench for three more hours
drive 1/2 -2 hours home

go to bed with the kids at 7 ...
you get the pic,
the good news is I still only sleep about 5 hours Rolling Eyes

My dad had a saying "things are tough all over".

Blowhard retired early, but I'll bet he logged more lifetime hours on the job than most 9-5, 40 year stiffs.

My buddies that couldn't find something to get fired up about ended up teaching high school and traveling 3 months of the year. Not a bad strategy actually, esp. if you can live frugally. Live in OR and you wouldn't have to travel much - June, July, Aug have the best weather.

I like work when I can see the positive feedback loop ---- some stress case in a suit and tie in an office tower sends me an email all excited about some code that I cooked up while listening to music in my pajamas .. (Only in America...)

My grandfather always told me, "If is flies, floats, or fucks...rent it as it will always be cheaper in the long run."

So true Exclamation
As they say, in the end, no man ever lamented on his dying bed, ‘I wish I had spent more time at the office.’

Forrest - I'm right there with you. I feel that growing up poor gives you a perspective on life and money that you wouldn't otherwise have. Gives you an appreciation and an understanding for the things that are important to you.

I have a lot of respect for people that started this life with very little and have worked hard to create a life that is greater than where they started.

Mark, I hope the 'flies' part does not apply to your kites?
