Fresh snow and north winds greeted the five Montana kiters who shredded Norris Hill today. With temps in the teens, rock steady winds and cold smoke flying, we were all hootin’ and a hollerin’ at our good luck.

Again, we pushed the boundaries of where to kite in this fantastic place. The further we went from the road, the bigger the mountains and the more white the mountainscape became. All of us made repeated laps tracking lines down every vertical gully and depression we came across. It go to be ridiculous how much vertical we sliced and diced today.

While the lighting was generally flat, I did fire off a few shots . Enjoy, as these conditions are only going to last a few more days…

See ya out there,

Noah

I must profess! Why not kite up the hill and then just ski down! Is there something i'm not understanding?

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing, i'm just at a loss - is it too flat to ski down?

I'm planning some kite skiing this winter, only i figured i'd kite up, then rip it up free-like on the way down! Double the exposure!

Am I missing something?

All your questions will be answered when you go and hook into some good conditions. I'm new at it, but I have never feel like, 'OK, I'm at the top, wish I didn't have to hang on to this kite'. The kite always gives you more options, including just sailing off the incline for a nice glide.

In some of Noah's shots you can just see them working the powder gullies...covering in an hour, what it would take all day with chairlifts. It's just flippin ridiculas fun. Thumb's Up

I'm sure of that! Can't wait! I plan on hitting some glaciers in the spring. I'll absolutely send updates.

Its not about how steep it is - flat or steep - it really doesn't matter (well steeps are best!)... when you have gravity AND the power of the kite all you want do do is rip it - Rip It Hard!

Also, have you considered how much time it takes to take the kite down and re-rig it? Unless you have a huge mountain you're riding up it's probably not worth re-rigging your kite every 15 minutes.

Speaking of huge mtns and ripping it hard, these guys have the kite-up rip down technique dialed:

Gotta love the euros - nice video. It took me 5 days on skins to do that kind of vertical! I want a foil kite now too!

Not missing a thing... just depends on the wind and terrain. Sometimes freeriding down with the kite in the backpack is the funnest. Sometimes staying hooked in and powered up for repeated elevator rides is the ticket. Also depends on the gear you have. If you are flying a blimp, you may not want to waste the time rigging and pumping, or perhaps you didn't want to carry a 10 pound pump in your pack all day... but with a dedicated Snowkite many more mountain options open up.

Still it all depends. For me, anymore, I will only pack my kite and ride down if #1 there is light wind and I'm using the kite as an ascent tool or #2 I found that perfect and steep run that demands a bunch of gravity turns.

That said, Snowkiting terrain often offers the option of kiting to the top, and then finding that special line that allows you to let go of the bar and ride free while the kite floats above you... its very much like lining up on the perfect wave where the kite pulls you in, and then you ignore it while you rip turns... then you pull the bar in and rally back to the top.
#1 reason for kiting downhill? Double your speed with gravity and wind and scare the SH*T out of yourself!!!

I'll shut up now, cuz I could ramble for days about the joys of winter kiting.

Here's a vid link, check out the 'Men who ride up Mountains" link. http://www.flyozoneusa.com/videos
