Are there any good places to kite for a beginner when the wind is from the east? That is, a place where I will not be totally screwed when I end up downwind?

| Rooster has like a mile of beach. You just have to wait till it's not nuked out. Often there's an hour or two of light winds in the afternoon as the easterlies die off.

| rooster is a great place to learn. i went there a bunch when i was a noob. bridal veil is even better. knee deep water right now. brians windsurfing was out there yesturday teaching. the wind can sometimes be finicky closer to shore (launch) so make sure you have someone with you that knows how to launch and land. and dress warm, chilly yesturday! gloves and booties were a must yesturday.

Beginner, hmmm. I'm a beginner still (2 seasons at it now) and spent a good portion of time in the fall w/easterlies at RR! Huge beach, plenty of space, and I initially recalled a great opportunity to practice taking off on my non-dominant side, (or at least on the opposite side that I had been taking off from in the Gorge w/west winds)! Just don't go by yourself, unless u r a strong swimmer, and honed on your self-rescuing skills - anything could happen, and u should come to expect it will happen to u as a beginner!
RR is good fun, I really love this sport, and i'm growing to love it even more because it is frought w/all these new and peculiar obstacles!
Kite skiing next on my list!
Go for it, and remember to walk & launch way up east on the beach. That will give u more time on the water if you're struggling w/anything.

special K has it right - walk way far east - give yourself plenty of room to go down wind.

not looking too beginner friendly now (sometimes it does nuke till dark) - if the blowing sand hurts usually a good indicator of crushtanic beatdown in your future...
