one option no one has mentioned is buy new, but skip the dealer. Go thru an auto broker. I used the one my credit union recommended. told them the cars and options i was interested in. they went and found them. Told me the prices for all of them. I picked one. They met me at my credit union with the car, paid them. done. they charged $500 for the service. Sounds pricey, but the price they got me was much lower than i would have got on my own. they typically check dealers in id, wa, or, and ca. my car was brought in from out of state, and of coarse they dicker on price for a living. So even after paying their fee, i was still way ahead, and didn't step foot in a dealer, and did everthing by phone and email. No charge unless you actually buy.

i would definitely go the broker route if i was buying new again.

to answer the obvious follow-up question. Yes, i have heard of a similar service for girlfriends, but it is not generally legal, but there are some certain circumstances in Nevada where it is. And of coarse, what happens in Thailand, stays in Thailand.

Don't forget about dealer incentive financing. That can be a huge money saver. I know that Toyota had some good deals on financing - some plans as low as 0%. If you take into consideration the value of the reduced financing - it can be cheaper to buy new - rather than buying one or two years old.

As far as getting the best price. Internet is the way to go. Find two different vehicles you like - say a Rav 4 and a Honda CRV - then go to yahoo.com - then autos - there is a place where you can get a quote from like five dealerships with just a click of a button. Play each dealer against the other - and then play manufacturer against the other - if one gives you financing then go to the other manuf. and tell them you want dealer financing. Just haggle back and forth. Then go with the lowest price. But make sure you ask them to include everything - don't let them try and sneak anything at the end like etched glass bull shit. Then when you get there - ask them again - what is the out the door price - any shinanigans and you walk.

Pulled the trigger. I had a very good experience with the Tonkin internet sales person. He wanted to play ball and was aggressive in beating all competing offers. Griffith in The Dalles was good as well.

Gotta say - I got a pretty square deal at Vancouver Toyota. One dealership only, family owned, no lies - they got me a Prius when no one else could and were totally transparent in the deal. These guys are building the most sustainable Toyota facility on the west coast!

Also had a good experience buying my Element at Griffith in The Dalles.

Nomination for REALLY DAMN BAD Service Dept: Beaverton Honda

My Wife's Honda died intermittently while I was on a trip, so she goes in to Beaverton Honda. They tell her there's a $100 diagnostic fee that's fully refundable if they can't figure out what's wrong with the car. Sounds good... An hour or so later they come out with $2500 worth of work that the car absolutely NEEDS, none of it having anything at all to do with the engine dieing. They tell her it's all safety related stuff, and they can't let her have her car back if she won't pay to fix it. She gets hold of me & I tell her to tell them to go to hell. She has to fight them for over an hour to get her car back & get her $100 back. (They hadn't even bothered to try and figure out why it was dieing.) Total time wasted: four hours. I got home & checked the car out. NONE of what they said was wrong with the car was true. Nothing. I replaced the fuel pump relay, which was a known issue with Hondas, for $70 and the problem was fixed. Lying Bastards.
