| There is an unmentionable place across the river that is a four letter word, that is pretty nice for newbs like you and I. |

You didn't mention your location. Depending on where you live there are alternatives to HR. _________________ It's always happy hour somewhere in the world. |

| Your best bet is Jones beach or Sauvie but sauvie is pretty much over this time of the year. Rooster rock is also a great place to learn if you have a small kite. Rooster will spring to life with powerful east winds in a few weeks. |

The sandbar area can be crowded, but get used to it - every spot is getting crowded these days. Pick a lighter-wind day when there aren't so many windsurfers out and go for it. Feel free to say "hey, this is my first time out here, any advice?" to other kiters on the beach. My only request is that you don't ride close to the sandbar itself; head upwind and spread out. There is often plenty of room up by the new park (just below the Wells Island shadow) and the water's not as choppy as Wells. Also don't go all the way over to the Washington side. I see people with downed kites there all the time - the bluff creates a big wind shadow.
Another option is to take a jet ski up and launch from Wells Island. I think lots of people do that these days, but it's still less crowded.
And a tip: if your kite has adjustable power learn to use the strap on the water. Launch with it depowered and then power it to your liking once you're away from land.
Good luck! |
