Yeah well,
Here we are again...
There's been progress though:
That celebrity seeking half wit well digger little ricky has finally figured out a wind driven canopy just cannot be steered or even de-powered for that matter...
Next step is for him to realize the only difference between an up-daft and a horizontal thrust of wind is its orientation to outer space...
I'd venture it'll take him another 9 years to make that connection though, so:
in the mean time rest assured, if gust takes your kite you're going for a ride.
and no, you cannot expect to steer it, or even depower it--you see it's not a laminar flow type situation it's a wind driven canopy--a trash bag equivalent--you're alluvium end of story.
Well, just thought I'd note that progress has been made in an area of consistent darkness that literally has sparkled with well meaning, yet ill considered advise ...
You either see it coming or you take the hit...
there's no magic in a low kite, in fact, it actually diminishes your chances of getting lucky and regaining control enough to affect your landing speed
And no, once you've become accelerated pulling it does nothing to diminish the increase you have already realized to your effective mass, you'll still hit like a ton o' bricks.
My advise, watch out for yourself, there but for the grace go us all...

hmm yarded vs lofted. I'm interested to see where this goes.
personally I'd rather get lofted then yarded but that's assuming there is nothing down wind of me that I'm going to crash into.
I think more often then not there is something very painful lurking down wind of you just waiting for the opportunity for you to come hurdling towards it at high speed.

yeah I saw that picture too. I've never seen such a complex contraption for piecing a leg back together! definitely sorry to see that. I hope he makes/made a full and speedy recovery.
I say I'd prefer being lofted because of how floaty my kites are. "foil guy" when I go up I come down really soft even if the wind totally drops out.
I'm pretty used to flying my kites static and intentionally trying to get lofted for fun so maybe that's why I like that method better.
if there's something painful directly downwind of me I'll be keeping my kite low with one hand on the safety

Consider that you are "simply" a stoked rock climber, and through an abundance of zeal have suggested your bro Forrest go out to Red Rocks and tackle that 5.8 route...
What you failed to consider is that this North facing route is listed as a good route for the spring and fall...
You see, you don't know shit about the Las Vegas desert in JULY, all you know is that you want to be seen as an accomplished rock climber yourself.

Forest, just stay in your hotel room and stare in the mirror, that is going to be the safest thing to do even though you can make anything safer. I picked that route as it is north facing, your best bet for a trad climb at this time of the year. Its also a face climb mostly so your not going to grease out in the cracks..even though sandstone is super grippy (except the polished black stuff).
FYI, I climbed that route in June. We climbed the first two pitches before the sun rose over the horizon. Brutally hot up top? Yep. Fantastic climb that shouldn't be missed? absolutely. Time to top out with an experienced person leading.. probably closer to the 4 hour mark. If you get to hot, you can easily bail at any time. straight 150' raps from anchor to anchor..well there is a slight swing needed on one but only about 20'.
Your probably not going to find someone to blaze up it with an unknown at this time of the year (and there is nobody camping out there now) but it should be put in the top ten climbs I want to complete before I die. The upper pitches are sensational!!

haha yeah...
lets just say your forum speak is a little different then what I'm used to. took a few reads to get it wrong. I'm still not really sure what it was supposed to be about. rockclimbing or something.
no worries....work was slow and I was looking for interesting threads. this one just confused the crap out of me though
