I do believe that the 3 fin is going to be a little looser in the water. I love my 3 fin ss. I'm sure others know way more than I do about the subject.

Yeah, you would think that, but it's actually the opposite feeling in a lot of ways. While a quad will lock down hard when ridden in a strait line, it'll actually feel more pivoty in the turns. The two longer forward fins allow a point of pivot, while the overall fin layout provides more lift in the tail. This equals a board that can be super snappy off the lip, but incredibly efficient and fast down the line.

I usually ride a quad when I'm either lightly powered or in smaller, mushy surf. For the gorge they're nice for getting nice snappy turns in the swell. For the thruster, I'm usually powered up, in larger, more powerful surf and generally riding with some more power in the kite.

I have to agree, with Natedogg after growing up surfing. I find twins especially loose in the tail but can be fun if you know how to work it when the fins stall.
