A buddy of mine, Matt Kosmata, grew up swimming and windsurfing on the Columbia near Hanford (his Dad was a reactor engineer there). Shortly after he lost his Mom to cancer, he developed tongue cancer and passed away at age 42. This is one of the healthiest dudes you could have known.

Matt was a quiet guy, stereotypical introverted engineer, damned smart, and every once in a while he'd come out with these one-liners or responses that would catch you off guard and split your ribs. He was involved for many years in lobbying the Port to get rid of or reduce the "temporary" bridge toll, optimize the way it was collected, improve the waterfront and event site, and eventually helped us a great deal in the fight for the waterfront park land (we chased away a developer who wanted to build at twice the current legal height, for those who haven't been around here long).

Anyway, there's a reason for my post - I'm begging for money. I'm challenging people to match contributions for the park to help furnish the children's play area. While I don't have kids myself (nor did Matt), it's an area of the park in need of funding right now so we're memorializing it, as there have been other memorials that have been well-funded. Details can be found here: http://www.hoodriverwaterfront.com/other.htm . Just let them know it's going to the "Matt Kosmata Memorial Fund."

Thanks, and watch out for the green shimmer!

Your link is dead. I'd like to give a contribution in memory of my dear friend Paul Mann. He loved the Gorge and he passed away right there at the Event Site 2 weeks ago. I was going to his service at Crissy, but figured $1200 expense could be better spent here, or KB4C

Thanks for the heads-up, I fixed it. It linked the period at the end of the sentence. HTTP don't care bout no grammer...

That is a fantastic idea! What a great way to remember Paul, who was taken so suddenly and prematurely. I'm sorry for your loss. I know how unfair it feels to lose a buddy so unexpectedly. I never formally met Paul but had seen him in both the bay area and here. My condolences to his friends and family.

Ann from city council contacted me last night about using Matt's funds for a specific playground piece they want that costs $12K, and they are also shopping for other playground pieces for kids. I'll PM you with her email address.

Thanks Kip!
