despite all the pics of stand-up paddle boards surfing waves I still don't see what all the fuss is all about...

It seems like it would be on the order of snowtubing when you could be out snowboarding

I like it cause it would give me something to club seals with. It's boring waiting for waves so this could be a good way to pass the time.

We picked up 2 when we in Maui last time. We rented a cheap one, a Jimmy Lewis, and the Naish. The Jimmy Lewis and Naish were comparable when trying to catch a wave. The cheap one was a tank and wore you out before catching a wave. I really like the graphics on the Naish.

The nice thing about them is that almost anyone with decent athletic skills can jump on one of these and immediately be surfing waves without having been on a surf board for many years. And they're fun to cruise around on flat water in the mornings before the wind picks up too.

uhmm, I don't think you were quite lucky with your metaphor perhaps, but here goes:
They are completely different sports. Not only are they different in the application, but also range, when they are better and when they are more fun.

For me as long as I get in the water, I am having fun...but despite having surfboards from 6'6'' through 9'3'' in different configurations...am am only rarely taking out anything but the SUP. Not the worlds greatest surfer, but in general I enjoy riding the SUP a lot more.

Take Sunday..I went out..it was a marginal day..occasional overhead sets at 30 min intervals..., most were about hip high...when I was able to ride continuously the longboarders were for the most part sitting and waiting for the waves. On a SUP you can reach breaks that are way way out (I have my eyes set on a break I've only kited it is so far off shore). Sure you can prone surf it, but it will take you an hour to get there....

Two weeks ago I went out on my longboard...I was sitting tight for a long time between the waves...before I got a little fed up and started taking off on really sloppy waves...which of course would have worked with the SUP, but not on a longboard.

No doubt a shortboard turns faster than a SUP, but newer boards coming out now, aren't more than 8 feet, which will provide more agility. That said, although I like to share the stoke I am often glad when I hear that people aren;t that into SUP...it means one less guy I have to worry will find my spots Wink

Anyhoo...I guess to each his own.. Smile

It fits on a car and gets you out.

I have an 8 ft Flying Fish surfboard here in SPI and its difficult to get out through the waves here. We trade off the sit on top kayak and flying fish and the kayak is easier and catches more waves. Of course the waves are munchers at 3 sec intervals with 5 breaks before you get to the outside unless you are next to the jetty.

The SUP is much easier to get through the waves. I'm thinking of getting one to leave here too. In Maui, there were 2 sit on top kayakers, several SUP and several surfboards and everyone was havng a good time, but the SUP and kayak could catch more waves because the paddle got you the speed to catch the wave or get in the right position. Good thing we are allowed more than one toy.

Isn't it about getting out, catching waves, having fun, and having a variety of toys to play with? I love my Ninja mc but it sinks it the waves but the wind river highway to the overlook is amazing.
