This week I'm in a nice office building about a dozen blocks off of the strip in Las Vegas. Here's what I get to look at out my window. Lavender is such an underused color in the NW. I can't imagine what it looks like inside and can't get anyone to walk in with me.

Wikipedia definition:

Hookah (Hindi: हुक्का, Urdu: حقہ hukka) or shisha (Arabic: شيشة‎, Hebrew: נרגילה, Nargilah‎) or (Turkish: nargile) is a single or multi-stemmed (often glass-based) water pipe device for smoking. Originating in India,[1] it has gained popularity, especially in the Arab World. It had gained popularity under the reign of the Ottoman Sultans. A hookah operates by water filtration and indirect heat. It can be used for smoking herbal fruits.

Depending on locality and supply, hookahs may be referred to by many other names (often of Arab, Indian, Turkish, Uzbek, or Persian origin). Arghile or Nargila is the name most commonly used in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Armenia, Albania, Kosovo, Greece, Turkey, Palestine, Israel, Bulgaria and Romania, though the initial "n" is often dropped in Arabic. "Narghile" is from the Persian word "nārgil" or "coconut", from Sanskrit nārikela (नारिकेल)--as the original hookahs were made out of coconut shells.[2] Shisha (شيشة) is from the Persian word shishe (شیشه, literally translated as glass and not bottle), and is primarily used for water pipes in Egypt and the Arab countries of the Persian Gulf (such as Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia) as well as Morocco, Tunisia, Somalia and Yemen. In Iran it is called ghalyun (غلیون), ghālyun (قالیون), or ghalyān (قلیان) and in India and Pakistan it is referred to as huqqa (हुक्का /حقہ). The more colloquial terms "hubble-bubble" and "hubbly-bubbly" may be used in the region surrounding the red sea.

The archaic form of this latter Indian name hookah is most commonly used in English for historical reasons, as it was in India that large numbers of English-speakers first sampled the effects of the water pipe. William Hickey wrote in his Memoirs that shortly after his arrival in Kolkata, India in 1775:

“ The most highly-dressed and splendid hookah was prepared for me. I tried it, but did not like it. As after several trials I still found it disagreeable, I with much gravity requested to know whether it was indispensably necessary that I should become a smoker, which was answered with equal gravity, 'Undoubtedly it is, for you might as well be out of the world as out of the fashion. Here everybody uses a hookah, and it is impossible to get on without'.....[I] have frequently heard men declare they would much rather be deprived of their dinner than their hookah.[3]

Hookah bars are becomong widely popular, Its not an opium den. Just a night club with exotic tobacco smoking going on....

Hookahs are a great way to relax. Til your drunk stupid roommate comes home and knocks it over, burning a hole in your carpet. Not that I'd know anything about that...

So, showing my sheltered upbringing here...

with a hookah are you puffin' a mango? tokin' on a peach? inhaling steamy apple broth? What really is the concoction? Is it similar to me hanging out over the pan of spiced cider and sniffin up the fumes after the rum goes in? Never tried it so don't know anything about it.

Tks MS - didn't mean to jump you. Just defending my wife. Want to make sure she takes me to Vegas next time. Wink

If you want a cool place to hang outdoors, eat awesome deserts and smoke hookahs, check out the Pied Cow on SE Belmont street. Definately a busy place in the summer.

Tony, there are many ways to enjoy a hookah. They are designed to smoke flavored tobacco. So you are smoking tobacco which can give you a wicked buzz, however, for some people it does nothing for them. The flavors of tobacco are all kinds - just about every fruit flavor is in tobacco and things like Rosemary, cocacola, and so on.

However, I have known people who don't use it to smoke tobacco - but rather some other plant substance

The advantage to the hookah is that it is very smooth. Cigarettes can be pretty harsh on your lungs - the hookah filters out a bunch of stuff and you can inhale it in without having to cough up a lung.

You know, it's not entirely obvious from the billboard that a hookah is a smoking device...
